Pulling engine

Post by NWMO »

Hey all,

Hoping to find a failing throw-out bearing or pilot bearing. Quiet with clutch in, noisy with clutch out. I think I’m down to the mounts and bell housing, should pull out this evening or tomorrow.

Think you're gonna find a bad trans input shaft bearing...
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

It sounds like that isn’t to bad of a repair either, I would settle for that right now.

Well,

Came out pretty easily, no glaring problems, though the input shaft does have some play. Likely 1/8 to 1/4 turn in the shaft and some up/down looseness as well.

Its not the bearing on the input shaft. Its the other one inside the tranny
That bearing is getting hard to find.

Examine the shaft surface the inner bearing rides on. Is it worn or pitted?
That tranny is fixable if you can find a new or good used inner input bearing. sometimes I get them out of two wheel drive trannys along with many other interchangeable stuff

If shaft is worn , pitted or grooved a machinist can sleeve it. Cost is around 80 bucks

I will look at the FSM, but I assume the input shaft slides out the rear after removing the cover plate. How far down does the trans need lowered to provide the needed space to remove?

Hey Robert and all,

I didn’t pull the inner bearing, I assume the FSM is showing a keeper that is bolted from the inside holding the bearing in place? Here are some pics, seems like the outer bearing had more play than I would have expected.

The bearing in your hand is available at a lot of places
The inner one in the tranny is hard to find
The inner one goes bad
The one in your hand rarely goes bad, it is also the same bearing that goes on front end of output shaft.
Replacing inner can be done without taking the tranny totally apart but having done it that way once i prefer to take the whole tranny apart.
Mainly because its difficult to reinstall bearing without getting it cockeyed.
The shaft in your picture looks good
Can you take a closer picture of the surface the inner bearing rides on

You have to remove tranny from car to replace inner input bearing
The large gear (main idler) is too close and partial dissassembly of tranny front is required to move it back

Some barely noticeable super light pitting. If you zoom in, you will be able to see it in the pics. I hope the outer bearing comes with a c-clip, I mangled the old one removing it.
