Clutch noise

Post by brakejagg »

So I've got this strange sort of grinding/spinning noise every time I depress the clutch pedal. I can get away with just pressing it down half way or so and shifting, but any more than that and it makes the noise. Can anyone help me? It's an '86 with 190k on it.

And/or a bad pilot bearing. Both spin at the same time, when the clutch is depressed.

How do I investigate that? Drop the trans and/or transfer case?

Sounds more like the pilot bearing. To change either the throw out bearing or pilot bearing is a big job, might as well put it off as long a possible until you can not stand it. usually there is little risk of further damage even if you push it. if the throw out bearing is bad, it could eventally damage the clutch pressure plate assembly, but that should be replaced along with the whole clutch kit (pressure plate, disk, t/o bearing, pilot bearing), if you do the job, you should also consider replacing the rear main seal on the crankshaft, it does not cost much, but it is some extra work. if the fly wheel need to be resurfaced, it has to come off anyway. if the face of the flywheel is smooth, without heat marks or tiny heat cracks, you likely would not have to resurface it.

good luck.

I would pull the motor. I've pulled both the motor and tranny separately before. If you have a lift and are strong / have a friend, that may be the easier route. However, if you have a cherry picker, pulling the motor is the way to go. Just make sure you label all vacuum lines, unless you have converted to a weber 32/36.

Also, these cars don't have a typical transfer case like normal 4x4 vehicles do. The transfer case is integrated into the transmission. All toyota did was they took the FWD tranny, added the EL gear and the selectable 4wd mode to it.
