Going to figure out what I want for a roof rack.

Post by NWMO »

Hey all,

Kind of a lazy day, but did pull the ceiling out of my car to help motivate the roof rack project. I think I will hit a local JY and see what’s available. I’m going pretty much full length, I want to be able to haul a couple of kayaks or throw on a roof basket depending on need. I’m hoping to set it up conveniently enough to pull everything but side rails off most of the time.

I’m going to hopefully fish from the kayak tonight (taking my wife’s van), but here are a couple of pics from yesterday.

On the relative bright side, I tore very little up getting the ceiling down. The front “rail” broke a few chunks off and is super soft/breakable. I also broke the two push plugs in the rear, but I’m sure I can find something for those. Is there a good spray product that would provide some additional integrity to the old plastic? poly urethane?

Some quick set epoxy or JB Weld plastic weld (not the normal grey type) could be spread thin on the backside for additional support, but could lead to breaking the plastic, because it increases the rigidity of the part.

I would not use JB weld, or any brittle glue. use large area washers, or specially made rectangular plates, bent to fit the curve of the roof, and use RTV or polyurethane adhesive (like the kind used for windshields), under the washer.

that should spread the load out nicely, and prevent any leaks.
