Tercel name

Post by Ellisdee »

I don’t know if it’s been posted but the name Tercel is from the Latin for 1/3...Tercel’s are sub=compacts or the third level down from full size. Tercel is also the British term for a male hawk, who is usually 1/3 the size of the female...just some cool trivia for you.

That explains the hawk logo I've seen before. Cool!

From wikipedia:

The name "Tercel" derives from the Latin word for "one third" as the Tercel was slightly smaller than the Corolla[citation needed]—much the way "tiercel" refers to a male falcon, which is one-third smaller than its female counterpart.

early JDM tercels actually had stylized hawk hood ornaments, as well as the hawk logo on the horn in the center of the steering wheel.

though with 62 hp not many would see their econobox as a "mighty hawk".
