I doubt it. the normal sedan '87 tercel is a completely different car, the engine and trans is transverse in the engine compartment. new design drivetrain. Only the '87 Tercel WAGON is the same as the '83-86 wagons, and the '83-86 sedans, and only the 4wd has the EL gear, and the PTO for the rear axle.

That being said, it is possible that toyota used the same gear cluster in the transverse transmission, and there is a small chance the syncros might be the same. but you would have to compare them side by side to know for sure. I would be surprised if they were the same, perhaps there is a part number for the syncro that can be compared somewhere.

Whenever I'm at an autoparts store looking for bits for Lenny, (an '87) I always tell them its an '86 because otherwise I get the wrong part half the time. Keeping the 2nd general tercel as a wagon into the 3rd get (sort of gen 2.5) really seems to mess up auto parts store clerks.

toyota does that, not only that their factory tech support will tell them not to install the identical part for a different model (but with a different part number). they claim safety-liability blah blah but I think they want you to buy a new car. "oh, look. that part is obsolete, it is no longer stocked. too bad".

often parts like windsheild wiper motors are identical with a different plastic cover, or a different color connector, or comes with different length screws for mounting, but they will never tell you that. As if swapping parts with a different color connector will cause a safety problem. their answer ALWAYS is, "do not use the incorrect parts".

only way to know is to get tech drawings of the actual parts that shows dimensions and tolerances. otherwise you have to buy and measure them. i happen to have a new set of syncros that forum member Xirdneh located, that I am saving for the end of civilization-as-we-know-it spares.

You can buy a set of syncros and take accurate measurements and post them here, if they match my new Tercel4wd syncros I can confirm it. if they do not match you can send them back. might be worth the trouble.

I've got a C50 rebuild kit for my MR2 that has all of the syncros, I'll see if I can find time to measure them up this weekend and post results. Who knows, might get lucky.

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
