Weird CV axle problem

Post by Pocwolfsburg »

I have been trying to replace my drivers side CV axle for some time. I ordered the first one from the parts store that I work at and it was no where near correct. I went to a different store where I ordered a second and third axle. Neither of these two will go in all of the way. They seem to be getting hung up on the spider gears. I have attempted to persuade them with a hammer but I'm afraid to get to aggressive in fear that I will damage the diff. The splines appear to be spaced wrong (?) or something as there are marks on the edge of several of the splines as if they are making incorrect contact with the spider gear. Wtf?! Has anyone else run into this kind of problem? I'll post pics of the contact marks when I get a chance.

There is one company that made a bunch of badly fitting axles. I had one. Luckily I had a broken differential and cut the spider gear out and smeared it with valve lapping compound then hammered it on and off the shaft until it shaved off enough material to allow shaft to slide in easily. I mailed the gear to another member so he could do same.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I've always had to whack mine with a hammer to get it to pop in.

I wish that it was the c-clip but it pops in no problem. It is getting caught up on the splines. There are little curly metal shavings where the spider gears are cutting into the them, like they're too wide or something.

Update: I took a Dremel to the edges of the splines and it slipped right in.

Beware of new (non-rebuilt) axles!
