Rear bumper compatibility?

Post by mmmbeer »

I'm looking for a rear bumper assembly for my 85 4wd SR5, and the U-Pick-It sort of near me has an 85 hatchback. They said the bumpers are compatible, but I'm not sure about that. Can anyone help me out before I drive 2 hours to find out it won't work?

Eh, maybe maybe not.

Here's a limited picture of the hatchback I sold.

Funny, I just came to the opposite conclusion from looking at pics online. It looks like the upper portion of the 4wd wagon bumper cover dips down on each side, and the body cladding where it attaches is different vs. the hatchback, so the hatch bumper doesn't attach flush the way the 4wd bumper does. I'm thinking maybe it would fit, but the bumper cover is not the same.

@irowiki, I saw on car-part.com that there's a salvage yard in Kirtland, near Farmington, with a 1984 4wd rear bumper assy. Are you familiar with Highway 64 Truck and Auto Salvage?

The hatch bumper looks like it is in 3 pieces, whereas the T4 is 1 piece.

Ah I suppose so, the front bumper was the same though. I'll have to look at my FWD wagon and see what it looks like.

Yeah they almost NEVER update their database and I would be SHOCKED if they still had the Tercel as they tend to not keep anything prior to the 90's. Give them a call and see!

Ha, you nailed it--called them yesterday and the response was, "Oh yeah, we crushed that." Grrr. Got a line on one in southern CO from car-part.com though.

I am not sure about the hatchback, but the 2WD wagon and 4WD wagon bumpers are not compatible. They look the same externally but the bracket spacing is different.
