Oil dip stick o-ring gasket // front main seal

Post by 4doorVIP »

Hey guys, my oil leak may be coming from oil dip stick. I removed the cracked OEM o-ring and replaced it will RTv blue - does not look like it held.

The local dealership ordered in part no 90311-32020 for the front seal but it looks to be incorrect.

GASKET, LEVEL GAGE
21655‑60200 3A*..AL2*

SEAL(FOR OIL PUMP)
90311‑32001 3A*..AL2*

Could I get help confirming the part number for these?

thank you in advance

Check out the OE part number EPC stickies in the Part Numbers - OE and Aftermarket Forum.
I didn't know the dip stick had a gasket ? ? ?

EDIT - Ahh, you mean the O-ring at the base of the dip stick tube! My bad! Interesting point - have to remember to check mine - Thanks!

Can't help you on the part numbers 4doorVIP, but it is easy to locate the oil leak that you are curious about. For one thing, these Tercs do tend to have slight issues with the front seal leaking. Could be a good possibility that the front seal is the culprit but before you go throwing parts at the car there is an easy way for the home mechanic to check for the leak himself.

If the leak is not obviously visible; take some spray engine degreaser and soak the area in question...let it sit and then wash off with a hose or pressure washer. Be careful if using a pressure washer that you do not soak any electrical components under the hood...especially the dizzy. (cover in plastic bag)

Then buy a bottle of engine leak dye test dye (I buy mine at NAPA $6) and add it to the oil. You will need to buy a regular black light bulb (usually any department store will have them) and use a drop light or small shop light of some type for the black light.

Run the car for 5 mins and then shut off. Now, using the black light shine it around all the areas of the engine that has any type of oil gasket. The dye will show up in a flourescent green color where ever new oil is leaking from. I have done this test many times and it works great for pin pointing the problem area with hardly any time or money invested.

***You do not need to change the oil after the dye is added, it will not harm anything. It will drain out on your next oil change.***

It is apparent that your dip stick is going to be a leak issue so I would suggest putting the proper o ring seal on it and fixing that known leak first before attempting the dye test.

Good luck on finding the bleeder. It is a pet peave of mine to see any type of fluid under my car at anytime...unlesss I had A/C when I could understand why water would be under the car.

I have never seen any significant amount of oil coming out from the dip stick tube, a leak here is possible but I think the design of it means the most you will get is a wet spot. If you are seeing a lot of leaking oil in this area there is a high probability that is coming either from the front main seal (crankshaft) or the camshaft front seal. It is also possible the front the valve cover gasket is leaking down the front of the engine and "daylighting" out at the oil pump/dip stick location.

verify the course of the leak before you try and fix it, otherwise you will just be wasting time.

Petros is right on the seals on the front of the motor for sure. I should have been more specific with the exact front seals in my post. I like the way the veterens of the forum are as descriptive as possible.

To anyone unfamiliar with specific parts and terminology on a new car to them can sometimes be difficult to understand as well as frustrating. I really appreciate the exactness of how the Highest Ranking Members describe specifics in their posts. I am getting better at this but can still miss stuff occasionally.

Thanks to all the guys who keep this forum rockin'. I have never been left hanging, always helped out to the end...awesome.

To get even more descriptive......it's 96711-19010--"RING, O (FOR OIL PUMP)" the little "O" ring that goes on the base of the dip stick tube, mated into the oil pump. Check out my post right below yours--I posted a full set of parts diagrams with cross referenced OEM numbers. Your part is on page 15 of the file. The dealer ordered you the main oil pump shaft seal--15100C (your ring is 15100B)

Fun tidbit: You get this "O" ring when you buy a full rebuild gasket set. But I'm assuming you don't want to spend $50 for what my dealer lists as a $2.50 ring, if it's even the root of the issue, I'll defer to Petros there.

Take care,

Sounds like you got it fixed...good deal. It never hurts to have spare o rings lying around.

An easy way to just make sure you still aren't leaking oil is to park over top of a clean piece of cardboard. Check it to make sure each time you start up the car to make sure no new oil spots are showing up on the ground. It makes it easy to see if there is still an oil leak. This will only work if the leak is big enough to drip to the ground and not if the leak is so small that it drips so lightly that it sticks to engine or car somewhere up above before dripping to the ground.

Check dipstick each time before driving to assure proper level is being maintained for the first while since the repair.

So I also just ordered from Toyota an o-ring for my dipstick tube as well. I ordered 2 so I would have a spare or a friend of mine has a Terc so if they need one I will have it. I can't get it till Tues and I am changing my water pump so I had to remove the tube. The old o-ring is obviously hard and needs to be replaced.

I would like to get my car on the road this weekend and don't want to wait for the o-ring on Tues. I went to the parts house and bought 3 different o-rings to try. They are rounded o-rings but the dipstick tube looks like a flat sided o-ring. Is it flat because of age or is that how they are?

I had run into issues where you can not interchange styles or a leak will occur. Is this one of those cases?

Hey, 4doorVIP,how is the o-ring seal holding up on your car that you got the o-ring out of the kit working? Any leaks?

This is any easy enough part to swap if one of these rounded o-rings doesn't work and I can just swap it Tues when mine comes in to the dealer.

hey TURTCEL so far so good my man - zero leaks
here is the el cheapo o ring kit I picked up:
Image

I say find a kit and go that route. The first trip I made to the store the clerk eye balled the oring, I got home and it was too big to fit. It was a free o ring but the drive back and fourth was not worth it. Better to save the hassle and get a kit like this to save time for future projects.

I also put a light bead of RTV around ring, I'm sure it is not needed but I had a big tube of the stuff, why not eh>

You can likely seal the dipstick tube with some RTV good enough, even without an o-ring. there is no pressure on this joint, it is mostly to keep splash and oil vapors contained in the crank case. I do not ever recall replacing mine, all where hard and brittle as a life-saver candy, I just speared it with RTV and never had a leak.

^yeah not a bad plan either. If you still have your old oring keep it on there then rtv around it.
I did this with my haggered distributor seal and it is holding up nicely without leaks

Thanks for the advice guys. I really don't like using RTV in these situations...if it isn't used right it can be more of a hassle than anything. I think I will just try one of the o-rings I got, picked up the 3 different ones that it could be so I will see how that goes. I will put a little oil on the o-ring upon install to help seal it up.

Probably will just use it this weekend and replace it with the Toyota o-ring when it comes in.

I am not shooting down any advice on this job, I was just hoping to get some clarifiction on the type of o-ring that is used stock.

I forgot to put dipstick back in before a test drive the other day only to come back to a oil sprayed hood and engine...kinda wondered why I was smelling oil on the drive. I cleaned it all up and put the dipstick back in, glad it was only a short drive that I went on. I actually had slightly over filled my oil at change time anyway so when the oil sprayed out it ended up taking it down to the correct level. That's is one way to get the oil out of the car....Haha. not recommended at all. A damn mess more than anything.

Thanks again for the responses guys.
