82 Thermostat housing

Post by Alexucf »

Hello I’m looking to replace my thermostat housing on a 1982 three AC Tercel. I just want to confirm what is the part number and is the rock auto parts replacement for that accurate

Do you need the housing, or the thermostat itself?

You can get the thermostat on rock auto, but the thermostat housing is no longer available. You're going to have to source one from another member. While we aren't affiliated with them, there is an excellent tercel 4wd facebook group that may be useful in finding a used replacement housing.

Shame on me for not actually checking. I'm really surprised they are still available. Make sure you get a gasket, new thermostat, and make sure the thermostat doesn't move when you put the housing on or it'll leak.

use gasket sealer to hold the T-stat in place as you put the cover back on the housing. the t-stat tends to want to fall out of place, and when you tighten it down (unknowingly), it will leak all the coolant out since it is not seated, so it can not seal.

So I looked further into the leak to discover it’s leaking from the top of this bypass tube or something that connects to the Water pump . See photo

Is this a threaded pipe? What’s it for ? Can just plug it ?

Thats the bypass tube. It allows coolant to circulate until the thermostat opens. No, you cannot plug it unless you want to damage your engine. It uses o-rings on each end. Remove the housing, making sure NOT TO BREAK THE FRAGILE TVSV (the thing will the bundle of vacuum lines attached to it), carefully pull the tube out, clean the orifices and the area where the o-ring sits at, replace the o-rings (you can use the green a/c o-rings commonly found at auto parts stores, assuming there is one in there of the correct size), and put it back together.

Ohh so cool. This car is totally stock. Hoping to upgrade the carb soon.

Quick question How important is the smog pump on this car I don’t live in California so no Emissions for me. Will it run better or worse. Trying to see what minimal upgrades I can do, ... is there a thread specifically for that I know sometime in the forms with these types of topics Get answered multiple times.

I dont think it will really affect the car any, unless yours still has functional cats. The one on my '82 has been disabled by cutting, pinching, and welding shut the two exhaust tubes that run to it. The tubes had rotted out behind the head, so all it was doing was making noise and dumping hot exhaust onto the firewall.

Reason why I ask is I remember on my Mustang I pulled the omissions and smog pump off freed up some horsepower but I don’t want to like the check engine light to come on or anything like that

These cars dont have check engine lights haha. If your engine has the stock carb on it, and its running fine, leave emission system alone. The carbs can get finicky when you start disabling stuff. Plus, the pump doesnt rob any power from the motor. Its a weird reed valve design, unlike fords solution. I would say remove it all once you get a weber for it.

that by pass tube is an easy fix, remove the housing and it is a slip fit. get it off (careful of the TVSV valve, it is platic and easy to break when old and brittle, you need it!). take the tube to an auto parts store and they will match the o-ring size. put it back on with sealant, even on the o-rings (to act as a seal lubricant). t he o-rings are easy to damage on intallation, so make sure you clean up inside the bore they go into, and apply sealant on the o-rings (light layer), as well as on the gasket face of the housing.

the stock carb actually works well when in good tune, check for vac leaks and correct vac hose routing (use the vac diagram in the service manual to check all connections and routing). most of the emissions components actually improve livability and economy, so do not just remove them. the system is designed to run with them in place, it will never run correctly if you just rip them all out (many have found this out the hard way).

you can likely remove the EGR components, and plug the holes, without worry, and set the spark timing at 10 deg BTDC (rather than the factory 5 deg), that will improve economy and performance a little.

Good luck.
