After ordering just about everything Amazon Prime has to offer (taking full advantage of their return policy), I found a replacement boot that fits almost perfectly. It's the Omix-Ada 18885.30 Manual Transmission Shift Ring Boot (http://www.amazon.com/Omix-Ada-18885-30 ... ref=sr_1_1) and costs about $9 on amazon. I just installed it today so don't know what it wears in the long run, but it seems like a very good replacement.

Sorry for the gravedigging but didn't want to start another post if this can be answered here.

Does anyone know if a shortshifter from AE86 or any other toyota fits our Tercels?

The Tercel4wd shift lever is unique to this car, even the front drive trans has a very different shift lever and likage.

there are some of the parts from the 4wd small trucks that are similar, the plastic wear parts, but not sure which. might be possible to get a short throw early 4wd truck lever and make it work (likely some mods required), but not sure.

You can cut off about 1.5 to 2" from the stock shifter, grind it down and rethread the end so you can get shift nob on it would be a good and simple place to start. I have been meaning to try that since I have a few extra shift levers.
