It does not have HAC, CA cars had a different emissions setup than Federal models. If you want to disable it, you would want to remove the valve and install a block plate, plus cap the lines and remove the EGR modulator.

Oh the wife was wondering, does she (the wagon) have power steering?

Also, since I live in hill country, the brake upgrade Petros did is top of my list. I'd just do the vented rotors for now. A few questions:
(2) vented front rotors from a '92 Tercel
(2) home made aluminum shim/spacers 1/8" thick to get the correct off-set on the rotors
(2) MR2 front calipers L and R (from 1986)
(2) MR2 flex hoses with banjo fittings
I used the MR2 calipers because that is what I had, it is likely the '92 Tercel calipers would work exactly the same way, they look very similar (dimensionally the same and same dia. piston) but they are not the same part number.
Will everything from a 92 Tercel work? The rotors, calipers and flex hoses?

There's even a 92 Tercel in Arlington and Portland I can check on the way home!

it does have power steering. I think all of the brake rotors and calipers, plus the flex hoses, from a '92 or newer Tercel should all work. You will still need an 1/8" shim, either make from the drawing or buy them from forum member Synth, I think he still has an inventory of them.

You can buy these parts new from rockauto or any other supplier, or get used but serviceable parts from the wrecking yard. Unless you want to have the better brakes right away, I suggest waiting until the current brakes need to be replaced and than swapping it out. that way you get maximum usage out of your brakes. The stock brakes are not likely to fail, they just overheat easily and get warped, still usable it is just very annoying to get the pulsing through the brake pedal.

The wife says since it has power steering, she might not let me drive it

That is excellent advice, I'll wait until the brakes wear out or I torch them!

My wife stole my Terc too. At first they say they don't want to drive it and that it is your car but in the end one taste of the Terc and she's snakin' it right out from under ya.

You could remove the P.S. belt and tell here there is an issue that will cost you too much to fix right now and then drive it yourself...haha, that would never work...women are too damn sharp.

Even worse when "The wife" reads the forums too! I'm irowiki's wife, and I may not post much but I generally read and keep up on repairs he's posting about and parts since I'm the one doing the internet searching to find the parts we've been needing for the first gen tercel we have. Hell, I was the one who told him to buy it but I personally hate manuals, if it was an auto I'd likely be driving it.

Don't be scared if one day he posts pics of it and it's suddenly painted hot pink with hello kitty stickers. (I kid)

Haha, that is funny. I actually saw your postings on this topic and knew you were his wife. Like I said women are very sharp. My wife knows what I am going to do wrong before I even do it. Guess that is why we love our wives...they keep us in line. Enjoy that Terc, but at least share with the hubby, my wife loves the Terc too much to share. I am stuck driving a blue station wagon.

It gets worse. I just found a local 81 sedan... automatic, for 500$. At first I laughed and said we could strip it to fix up our car since the insides on ours are shot and this one looked cleaner, then I saw the thing was an automatic in its interior pics and joked I could have one of my own. We emailed the guy since it's listed on CL without a number to see what he has to say about it. Sadly we might miss it since we don't have much time between now and our flight to get the wagon.

Imagine two little banged up sedans cruising back home if we went to pick it up in our current crap car.

Yeah that would be kinda comical. But remember a $500 car is $500 for a reason...prob has issues that surpass the value of the rig. I know the car that Petros is selling and have seen it in person. It is a great little car. You will be very pleased with it and should give you plenty of trouble free miles. But yes 2 little beaters would be funny to see on the road...almost like a small gang. Could we call the gang Hells Angels?....haha I think that name has already been taken.

Around here the older cars like the first gen Tercels aren't appreciated at all.

I figure if it runs like a top and just needs painted, it is a steal and I'll sell my current first gen. If it is questionable I'll strip it off good interior parts I need and swap said parts into mine and resell the stripped one as a runner.

when you drive around in 30 year old, $500 cars, it is always a good idea to have a running spare (or two)! or you might be stuck at home fixing it some days instead of going to work.

We have 4 cars for 3 drivers, two have about 150k miles, and have been fairly reliable, but the other two (including my T4wd daily driver) has well over 300k miles. Several weeks ago 3 out of the 4 of our cars were not running! Now I have two running, and working on the other two. If it was not for this Tercel I am selling I would not be earning any income until they these cars are back together.

But now I have a deadline to get one of the other two running, this Thursday Irowiki and Vienna are coming to pick it up. Good thing, or the non-runners might be sitting around all winter (though I had to cancel some weekend activities I planned to do instead of fixing old cars!). Oh well, one of the consequences of driving old cars. Still far cheaper than buying a new car, but you sometimes have to change your weekend plans, not often, but it does go with driving an old car.

Oh. I haven't flown with tools before, and my toolbox is a whopping 30 pounds, so I may need to carry on some of it. What can I safely carry on a plane? Sockets only?

I would leave your tools and head to Harbor Freight Tools while you are in town and pick up a kit for $50 bucks. Then you won't be limited on what tools you can bring. Petros' Terc is solid and a tool set should not even need to be pulled out on the trip...in my opinion.

We're going to be stopping by every pick and pull between there and home, hence the tools, and I would always want the basic tools for stuff like hoses, fan belts, etc.

you can carry on board any tools that are under 6" long, and has no sharp points or blades. these are TSA rules. So the sockets, socket extensions, open-end or combination wrenches are all okay, if under 6". I have a very short 3/8" drive ratchet handle that is perfect for travel, and than check in my baggage a 3/8" drive flex head handle that is about 12" long (small breaker bar). The combination of the two allow me to quickly break loose and remove almost anything in a Tercel. Needle nose pliers, screw drivers and utility knife need to get checked.

you do not need a lot of tools for doing major work on a Tercel. sockets and combination wrenches of" 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, and 19mm, a spark plug socket, several extensions and universal joint for the sockets, ratchet handle of course, a breaker bar handle, a philips and flat head screw driver, an adjustable wrench, long nose pliers (I like the ones they call brake pliers with the 45 deg tip). Add a torque wrench and you have pretty much everything you will need for this car. If you plan to take off the large axle nuts you will need a 30mm socket and a large breaker bar. A flat scraper like a putty knife and a pry bar comes in handy too, but I do not travel with the pry bar since is too heavy. Some of these you can buy locally at discount stores since they are cheap enough. I also bring electrical tape, duct tape, and a small tube of form-a-gasket sealer, these can also be carried on or checked.

You will not need any allen wrenches for a Tercel, nor any of the newer type special screwdriver tips.

Since occasionally tools will disappear out of checked bags, I always carry on as many as I can. I put all of the tools under 6" a heavy duty freezer type zip lock bag, and when your carry-ons goes through the scan you take them out of the bag and set it in the tray so they can see and inspect them. I have never had an issue traveling with tools which I do several times a year. Before you pack the tools clean them off real good with solvent and than soap and water, you do not want them smelling like motor oil or gasoline (that could set off alarms), this goes for both the checked tools and the carry on. I carry the tools in a soft zipper pouch, not a tool box. Much lighter and easier to pack. You can spend a lot of a "soft" tool bag, but I just go to a second hand store and find something suitable like a soft brief case or even a travel bathroom bag. the heavier the fabric and zipper the better they hold up, you should not have to pay more than a few $ for a used bag to put your tools in. I like the soft bags so much I do not even use a hard tool box anymore. all of my tools are carried in zippered pouches or soft brief cases.
