1983 T4WD SR5 *clean CA car*

Post by tercel4wdrules »

I finally got this car back as a loan to a friend for an extended period of time. I can say I went through hell and back to bring this car down to So Cal from Nor Cal after the car was only running on 2 cylinders when I bought it several years ago. We swapped in a used engine with a lot of new parts at the time. It has been driven to Oklahoma and back and now I have to part with the car because I don’t have the time or space to continue repairs and maintenance on it. I would like for the car to go to someone that will finish what I cannot. It’s a clean CA car, just needs some TLC. It has 224k miles right now. The biggest issue with it right now is that the clutch doesn’t seem to disengage properly and it won’t idle. Registration is current. Ideally, I would like for this car to go to someone outside of CA where it won’t have to pass smog anymore. I will be accepting reasonable offers. The car can be driven but it’s tricky to drive… hopefully I won't have to post on Craigslist.

do you think it needs a new clutch? or clutch cable perhaps?

I tried increasing the clutch pedal free play and it didn’t seem to make a difference. When I first start it I can get it into 1st gear but subsequent shifts into 1st and it won’t go into gear. Next step would be to put washers at the bell housing and see if that does anything but maybe the pressure plate is bad. But once the car is rolling it will shift into other gears ok...

stretched clutch cable perhaps? or worn out clutch?

Or is the gear lube low? have you checked the gear lube level?

Gear lube level is fine, it's definitely a clutch problem.

Since there was no interest here I've decided to post on Craigslist. I just hope the car goes to a good home...
