MORE %&#@*&^% SPAM ! ! !

Post by ARCHINSTL »

OK - I've been deleting spam attacks for a couple of weeks now - seeming about 4-6 per week, and Mattel in OZ has been doing it as well, from his differing time zone.
Tuesday afternoon I deleted five or so. I got an email from dlb that I did not open until 2AM Wednesday about more spammers - I then deleted 60 (!) - and it took a half-hour plus.
Mattel has deleted over 20 between 18 and 19 Dec. and I've just deleted the aforementioned 60 !
I then made a few posts myself, and two more popped up!
I tried to make the math problem in registering more complicated (like I did before the board went to a new server earlier this year), but had no effective luck. I sent Neu a PM asking for help here.
So - bear with us and just don't look at any threads that have been posted by members with weird-looking names; we can't be on 24/7.

Hi, I'm actually living in Italy right now (Turin, near the famous Fiat Lingotto factory with the banked test track on the roof!http://jalopnik.com/5714628/fiats-roof-top-test-track). But am about to go travelling for a few days so will not be able to help out so much with this. In the short term is there anyone else that might be keen to become a moderator to help out perhaps? I'm hoping that his is only a christmas orintated spam attack.. but who knows? Usually there is not much work in being a moderator on this forum because generally everyone behaves! plus.. you can put it on your C.V! All the best these holidays you lot!

I have been a member of a few forums where you have to join and have the moderator approve your first posts, done to avoid spam. Sometimes it takes a few days for the moderator to review your new membership and posting for it to show up. Can that be done here?

It seems that we rarely get more than one or two new members a week, ever, and you have to clean out all the spam anyway. Seems better to cut it off before it even gets to the board. You have gone great duty at finding and removing them within a day or so anyway, would this not be easier and keep the board clean? It would only be a minor wait for any new members. It would only be an issue if a newbie needed a quick answer, and none of the moderators could approve it quickly, but I think it a minor inconvenience even in the worst case of having to wait a day longer.

I agree with Petros.

And between me and Mattel today, we deleted another 25-30. Neu has strengthened the spambot questions, though; we shall see.

Hi all, just looked then and it seems like no new spam for now so Chads changes seem to be holding the fort. (is Spam a Monty Python reference?) but have no problem with what Peter proposed - I think if we can have another moderator or two to confirm new members though it would be a lot easier.

Matt -
Did you see my PM? Between us, we've deleted another 8 or 9 since the change was made.
I just now deleted two more; one claiming to be from Sweden, but actually from Germany, with a porno web site link - the other claimed to be from the Netherlands, but was actually from the UK - a spambot, I discovered.
