Neat Oil Drain Pan!

Post by ARCHINSTL »

I just picked this up at Advance, but I'd imagine AutoZone and O/Reilly, et al, would have something similar.
It was $10.50. Dimensions on the photo.
I couldn't tell you how many times over the last 57 years I've spilled oil on my gravel driveway by hitting a big rock with the open 5 1/2 quart pans I've used.
Now I can drain Goldie's and the p'up's sumps consecutively!
When I drain her tranny and pumpkin (annually!), I recycle that lube into the truck's.

Interesting you mentioned that. Of the stack of 10 or so in the store, 2 had their caps neatly clipped from the retention ring. I took them back to the counter.
I plan on sending the company (FloTool) an email and asking for a couple of extras.

I might be inclined to carry it round by the drain spout instead of the handle though.

I can just see a guy walking it from the back of his T4 and across the parking lot to the collection drum and then cap being loose leaves a snake trail from the t4 carpet, over the bumper, onto the pavement, and at intervals - pinstriping his shoe until someone notices.

But it is a nice unit and I'd buy one.

This is sorta on topic, but is the "pumpkin" the rear diff?

Yes, it is the big roundish thing in the middle of the rear axle housing which holds the crown and pinion gears, etc.

I know what the rear diff is, I just never heard of it being called that

i have had one of these oil catch cans for a few years, but never intended to get one. i bought it to drain the gas out of our westfalia when it sprung a leak on the way to burning man a few years ago. it didn't occur to me until after we got home and i posted pictures on here that i could have just bought some tubing and siphoned the damn thing. oh well, the catch can did the job and i still use it now. i personally wouldn't buy it if i hadn't needed it that time but i do like how low profile it is--i can now do oil changes without jacking up the car, even on my wife's civic.

I thought about the height thing, as you are certainly right about not having to jack up the car.
But for me, it's moot, as when I change Goldie's oil, I also change the tranny and pumpkin, so the changing the first item means jacking her up (I raise front and rear to the same height for draining them).

I got one that looks like this:

Image

it does not have a "funnel" area to get oily, it drains directly into the chamber. It only costs $4.99 if I recall or I would not have bought it. It holds enough for 3 oil changes before you have to take it to the store to recycle the oil. handle it carefully and you do not get oil on the outside at all. I picked up another one at a garage sale for $1. A great invention.
