Clamp on inner tie rod tool

Post by Notmikeb »

Used a pretty neat little tool today that worked very well.
Autozone sells a tool designed for removing and installing inner tie rod ends and it can be used without removing the outer. It's basically like a serrated exhaust clamp with a slot for a 3/8" driver. Tighten it down over the tie rod end body and use a ratchet to loosen it up.

I was there looking for the traditional tube with a crowsfoot wrench built in when I saw this one and decided to give it a go. None of my large wrenches were narrow enough to fit on the flats of the tie rod. I'm sure there are other uses for this tool as well.

It just occurred to me that a 30mm bicycle headset wrench would have worked pretty well. I have a bunch of those. I always forget about my bike tools when I'm working on cars as they are all kept in the house instead of the garage.

I'm getting twenty of them so that I feel less anxiety when I open my toolbox drawer and 3 new inner tie rod ends look back at me, judging.
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?
