Re: '76 corolla - victoria, bc - $2000
This one's at a dealer. I drive by it every day and am so tempted. It seems like it was somewhat restored. If this was a civic it would be $5000-$6000. Except for North America, many of the 1st gen Tercels were 1.3 liters.

Re: Is this the AAP?
I capped mine off since the diaphragm leaks and a replacement one I had off another carb leaked as well. Unless you try to accelerate quickly from a stop when it's cold, it doesn't really make a difference.

Re: '87 4wd wagon (parts car) $150 (Cowichan, Vancouver Isla
If I had room in my driveway, I'd seriously consider buying it and fixing it up. After all, it's only $150. It's worth that even for a few random parts.

Re: Rom Dom's first Tercel
I've had several decades-old cars and, without exception, the previous owners seldom changed the oil. It seems that once cars hit a certain age, people stop doing maintenance on them. My point is, the first thing I do now is a full oil/fluid change on everything so I know when it was done and that t...

Re: In a Toyota 4wd again
There's a guy with an old (older than yours) diesel Land Cruiser in my neighborhood. Sometimes he's in front of me on my drive to work. He uses old cooking oil in his. It smells like french fries with maybe a hint of chicken fingers. I met another couple in an imported right-hand-drive diesel van th...

It's also strange that they re-list it every day on Craigslist in two separate ads: Once as a standard and once as an auto.

Re: 1981 tercel keeps stalling
A quick check for internal vacuum leaks that are not visible by checking the hoses can be done pretty easily. With my wagon I had a large vacuum leak in the auxiliary acceleration pump (AAP) diaphragm and in my EGR vacuum modulator valve (EGR-VM). Looking at the vacuum diagram in the post above, dis...

Re: Blue-ish smoke at high RPM
That's what happened to me as well. When I first bought the car it was puffing a small cloud of oil smoke when I accelerated from a stop. Usually it would happen intermittently (sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't). The first thing I assumed was valve guide seals so I replaced them, which i...

Re: Removing engine from automatic trans
As for the fear that the torque converter may move out slightly and not be fully engaged with the pump shaft, that can easily happen when replacing a removed transmission (it happened to me frequently as I was trying to wiggle the transmission into place). If the front of the transmission is tilted ...

Re: Timing issue
I realised last night after I posted that the same timing for 1 and 4 cylinders is probably normal. Since the camshaft rotates twice for every revolution of the crankshaft, the same timing as indicated on the crankshaft doesn't mean the camshaft is in the same place. #4 is probably firing when #1 is...

Re: Timing issue
I assume the holes (for balancing, like you and Petros mentioned) are to offset the key and keyway. I just pulled out my #1 spark plug and I verified that it is at the top of it's travel when the crankshaft mark is at Zero degrees. There's another weird thing though: Just out of curiosity, I checked...

Re: Timing issue
That's a bummer about the US vs UK gallons. You're right, my mileage isn't as good as I thought, but still much better than the US EPA ratings (24 mpg on the highway and 22 in the city). For manually checking the timing, what I did was turn the crankshaft until the mark on it and the camshaft pulley...

Re: Timing issue
There is no painted mark on the crankshaft pulley, at least there wasn't. I used a white paint marker to highlight the small notch on the pulley. It's the only notch or marking around the pulley. I didn't verify that it aligns with zero degrees when the actual piston is at TDC. A couple of times I h...

Re: Timing issue
check the position of the upper cam sprocket relative to the crank shaft using the alignment marks on the front of the head per the FSM. it is not difficult, just look at the position of the timing marks on the upper pulley with the timing cover off. that is the only way to know for sure what is go...
