Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Keith, All done. NOISE IS GONE! Mission accomplished. Yes, everything you say here is in agreement with the approach the guy used to press my bearing in. When I picked up the KOYO bearing at NAPA I noticed it was pre-packed as you say here, so I was in error to think that it was dry. When we install...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Had no real problems pulling the steering knuckle out. Took about one hour. Headed to the shop in the morning to get the bearing pressed in. My only concern is to make sure the bearing is pressed in correctly, as the FSM says, "Do not interchange the inner and outer races when installing"....

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Keith, Thanks for letting me know about the grease. Good to have another opinion on this as I have never used it and was not sure. The KOYO bearing is an open bearing that came with the care OEM, so I know that it needs to be packed. Should not be an issue to pack it... as long as I put the right st...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Sdoan, Excellent! Thank you so much for your advice on this. I have seen those holes in the rotors, but never thought about using them to get the rotors off! Key information! Very, very helpful to hear your suggestions. I just got off the phone with Ed and am good-to-go for 9:30 on Saturday. He says...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Getting ready to replace this wheel bearing on Friday evening. The plan is for me to pull the steering knuckle in the evening and then take this to Ed at the shop to press out the old bearing and put the new one in for $40 cash. Ed apparently does this for other shops in town, and was recommended by...

Re: Fuel Pump is chattering away

Appreciate the help from each of you. Thanks. To seal the gaskets on the pan and oil pump when replacing the crank shaft bearings I used permatex ultra black on the gaskets. Totally dry so far. No leaks anywhere. Says it is good to 500 degrees and recommended for valve covers. Wondering if that is a...

Fuel Pump is chattering away

I suspect that I am going to need to replace my fuel pump, but thought I would ask for some advice before getting into this. I have a ticking/clicking sound coming from around the head, which goes up and down with the revs. The sound is loud enough to hear through the firewall, and is noticable with...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Wow! That front brake upgrade is impressive. At this point I think I will stick with the stock rotors and calipers though. Just not up for doing anything quite that ambitious. Will be very happy just to get the bearing to stop pestering me... and to know that my stock rotors and pads are all working...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

Thanks for the advice. Good to know I can make it around town and get to the parts store without fretting. I would like to take the car on a 6 hour road trip with my son in about 2 weeks so am a bit concerned about the highway driving. Might want to get this done before then. My local NAPA store wil...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Question

I am starting to conclude that this is a front wheel bearing issue. The evidence: Before rer233 mentioned that a front wheel bearing would get louder on the turns I had already noticed that was a definite sign of whatever it was (but not knowing what it was). In neutral coasting downhill I would swe...

Front Wheel Bearing Question

I suspect that the sound I am heaing from the driver's side front wheel is due to a wheel bearing. I plan to pull the wheel this weekend to have a look... but not exactly sure what I am looking for? (I replaced a rear bearing on a VW bug about 35 years ago, but have never done one of these front bea...

Re: Engine Rebuild Crankshaft Questions

The good news is that this awesome T4 is now back on the road! Engine is running smoothly, and is not showing any signs of trouble. No leaks. No strange noices. This is a huge relief for me, and I am cautiously psyched about driving the car! (It is a nice looking car and I get a lot of comments on i...

Re: Engine Rebuild Crankshaft Questions

IF it turns out that I need to tap this stripped bolt hole on the sway bar bracket, then the idea of using a 7/16 bolt is starting to become more appealing than the 10 mm heli-coil kit (cost is not a factor for helicoils at $30 to save a T4 front end). That said, by coincidence I actually have the c...

Re: Engine Rebuild Crankshaft Questions

DL:B, Yes, you got it. It is one of the bolts with the 14 mm heads... and the 10mm hole size. Agree, I would not want to overtorque those bolts... and I did not do that when I put them in myself last time. But the damage has been done... and I certainly want to fixt the problem correctly the first t...

Re: Engine Rebuild Crankshaft Questions

New twist to my challenges: Last night my overly zealoous neighbor managed to strip the treads out of the 10mm bolt hole on the sway bar clamp on the driver's side (more on antisieze questions related to torque later in the post). I have not tapped a hole like this before, nor have I used helicoil. ...
