Re: WTB: TRANNY MODEL 03-70L (FOR 3A SCV MOTOR)

what year and which model Toyota is that from? where are you located? the lowest cost source is the self service type wrecking yards (Pull-A-part, U-pull-it, etc.), it is luck if you have one with a Tercel 4wd near you. But there wrecking yards that will ship you a warrantied trans. Good luck with y...

Re: Cheap lift?

There are a lot of threads on this topic, do a search on it since there is no point on repeating it all here. The wheel wells have pretty good clearance already, even larger 14" wheels and tires will fit without rubbing. How big do you want to go? There is a thread with discussion of different ...

Re: Where have I been?

welcome back. Intersting project, what about the engine and running gear? Do you have ideas on improveing that underpowered engine? Please do not cut up a good Tercel 4wd, they are getting rare enough as it is. Find a a rolled or wreck one cheap to cut-up and alter, you will save money and put an ot...

Re: New member, "New" 85 Tercel SR5!!

Welcome to the list. You might also consider changing the diff oil while you are at it, and replace the rear axle seals too. I hope you go through the rest of the car real good before you take it on any long trips. These cars are reliable, but when it has a lot of miles on it, almost anything can go...

Re: Cheap lift?

There are various way to space the springs, some have been used in an okay manner on the front, if it is limited to about an inch. More than that you alter the geometry in the suspension and the angle on the front CV joint to cause other issues. It think the best way to shim the front spring is to d...

Re: Digi clock crapped out!

The clock is built into the circuit board that makes up the cluster and draws its power from the board. But within this board is a number of contacts. Where the main power comes into the board at the large connector, where the clock plugs into the board, also where the controls on the dash meet the ...

Not want to buy: TVSV

There should be no relationship with the speedo and the TVSV, unless the Canadian version does something very different from any car I have ever seen. More likely the cable is wearing out and it was a coincidence. You can raise the car and remove the speedo cable housing from the trans end, pull the...

Re: Lowering Springs for FWD 81 Tercel

cutting the springs is an easy and cheap way to accomplish this, it will also stiffen them slightly. The shorter amount of coils will have the effect of stiffening it. You can also heat it to red hot and bend the spring lower to keep the soft ride. both of these methods you loose wheel travel, but t...

Re: Front crankshaft seal/oil pump housing

The oil pick up tube is stopping you. It attaches to the bottom of the oil pump inside the pan. You have to remove the two 10mm nuts that hold the pick-up tube in place on the bottom of the oil pump housing. So you either have to remove the oil pan, or you can get access by just loosening the front ...

Re: FWD transmission change?

That lever can be a problem to get it to clear. Try loosening the front mounts and lower the rear of the engine to give you more clearance (watch the distributor does not get damaged on the firewall, remove it if it will make contact). You should be able to wiggle it out by shaking it back and fourt...

Re: windsheild/window removal before painting

The rear glass is not too bad, I have done it without any fancy tools. The wind shield is another matter, very difficult to remove without breaking it, I have never managed it even through I have tried several times. It takes a very sharp and thin knife to cut through the gasket all the way around (...

All of the ones I have seen were always working, no matter the age. Could be corrosion on the contacts?

Re: 2WD transmission change?

The trans can be replaced from under the car without pulling the engine. Clearance is sometimes a problem, but it usually is less work than pulling the engine and trans together. Some people who have an engine hoist find pulling the engine and trans together from the top easier than just removing th...

Re: B5, Green Power... E85?

There have been a number of people that have converted older cars to burn alcohol way back during the Arab oil embargo in the '70's. I knew some that tried it. I do not know that the carb helps any, I recall you needed larger jets in the carb (or you can drill the jet larger) to allow a richer mixtu...

Re: New batch of improvements

You may have to shim out the front vented disks to make them work (I am not familiar with the FX16 brake off-set, but the MR2 brakes need the shim to install on the Tercel), but NAPA has per made wheel shims pretty cheap (like about $10-12 a pair), you would place them between the disk rotor and the...
