Re: To swap or not to swap? Ice racing Tercel
I have not inspected them closely, but I think are almost identical, and should be interchangeable. They use the same size intake and exhaust valves, so everything else should be pretty much the same.

with both rear wheels off the ground, engine off trans in gear (so drive shaft does not rotate, you can also have someone hold the drive shaft), on an open diff, turn one rear wheel and the other turns in opposite direction. LSD should not turn at all (make sure parking brake is off), and with drive...

'83 DX w/factory alloys, AC in Everett WA
Local used car dealer just listed this DX, it is a dealer run by the VOA to sell donated cars and boats. These usually have something wrong with them (why they were donated), but they can be a good buy. I almost bought a T4wd from them a few years ago for $300 that needed a head gasket, but was in o...

Re: Nooby question
welcome to the list Grue, where are you at? i have bought and sold a few of these cars, but money makers they are not. Where I live in the Pacific Northwest (north of Seattle area) these cars are still popular and reasonably common (more so than most 24 to 26 year old cars). They are worth keeping r...

open your oil filler and take a deep whiff, if it smells like gasoline CHANGE THE OIL. As a teenager I got a car for free with a thrown rod, I rebuilt the engine and got it running, first oil change it all runny and smelling of gas. It was the fuel pump. I know why it threw a rod, and was glad I cau...

No lift in the rear, stock springs. AFAIK they are original springs too. It does have gas filled rear shocks which may give it a little bit of lift.

The 4afe clutch is a little larger in dia, but they are totally different design. The 4afe flywheel is like a frying pan, high edges where the pressure plate assy bolts on, and the disk rides down in the "bottom" of the frying pan. It would be a very costly custom flywheel to make the 4afe...

Re: Complete car in Arizona
though this car is a DX, coming from AZ is likely has little to no rust. Desert states are the favorite place for restorers to look for good project cars. The sun does do in all exposed plastic however, so you will get a good body, but all the trim and intirior may need to be repaired/replaced.

Re: 2010 Pacific North West Meet
I am available for Aug 8-9, Aug 14-15, or aug 28-29. Any works for me.
I would prefer the first weekend in Aug, but The last one on 28-29 will do if more can make it. I have a family activity planned for Aug 21-22 so I can not come than.

I thought Toyota has several models with 4 cyl. diesels they imported, including the corolla. Might it be better to stay all Toyota? How hard is it to find one?

Re: Question guys
where was the fuel squiring out? Into the carb, or as Highlander asks, into the engine compartment? Do you have a leaky fuel line perhaps? You might need a new pump if it is leaking from the pump vent hole into the compartment. A leaky diaphragm will still pump fuel, but allow it to leak out the ven...

Re: Removing shift lever: manual trans
I do not think you will damage anything, but if you can not free it with some hard upward pulls, you might try heating it. Get a heat gun or small torch to heat the lower part of the shift lever (well below the boot). that should soften the plastic socket and allow it pull free. better count on repl...

Re: Question guys
Was it hot out? Fuel warming in the tank will expand slightly and could cause fuel to percolate out the fuel line.

Re: Mysterious Front End Clunk Cause ?
I have had the clunk even after new struts were installed, all the tie rod ends and ball joints checked, a heavy pry-bar put to all suspension parts, a large bearker bar with correct size socket applied to all suspension, engine mounts, and chassis bolts and nuts, replaced the steering u-joint: noth...

Re: New wheels!
I was looking for a more open wheel to show the brakes, and make the car look lighter. I just happen to have these 5 spoke wheels. I could keep checking CL and the wrecking yard until I find something lighter looking. But these German made 5 spoke wheels appear well made and very lightweight (likely...
