Re: slow startup?

With a carb engine, changes in engine temp, air temp, moisture, etc. effect how easy the car starts. The timing advance makes it a bit harder to start too, especially when cold. But after it runs for 30 or more seconds it is of little consequence, and the advanced timing will result in better power ...

Re: wobbling idle

The jumping timing is usually due to the distributor gear slop, presuming your distributor bearings are good. this is one of many reasons all newer cars went to either direct drive distributors (off the end of the cam) or crank triggered timing. It is more precision, uses less parts, and improves bo...

Re: How to Replace a Head Gasket: Petros method

Final Cleaning Before Assembly If you have not done so already, scape any carbon off the piston tops with the scraper. Blow the debris out from the edge of the piston and the cylinder wall, rotate the crank to push the pistons up and down to help. All of the following cleaning steps should be done ...

Re: Yay snow!!!

strongest installation of a t-stake in the ground will be when it is 90 degrees to the direction of pull, at the max load. So give it say 5 degrees (for the spring back) over 90 degrees from the rope angle.

Re: Seat Re-upholstery

I was considering re-upholstering my seats to cover them with some nicer fabric (leather perhaps?) and rebuild them to have better lumbar, thigh and lateral support. I have done upholstery work before on my early cars, but now I do not have as much time for that kind of thing, wrecking yard seats ar...

Re: How to Replace a Head Gasket: Petros method

We used the Newway valve seat cutting tools in the race shop, the same ones that 4wdchico posted the link if you wanted to purchase. You can do a more accurate and better quality job with these simple hand tools than with costly machine shop tools. But there are also ways this can be done with tools...

Re: Smog test(ing my patience)

The testing is only done at a few steady state conditions, and easily met by a properly jetted and adjusted weber. The manufacturer was required to reduce total emissions over a whole driving cycle, which they do not test in the yearly testing. That is why all the other equipment is necessary, and w...

Re: How to Replace a Head Gasket: Petros method

Now the process is about cleaning the head and block and preparing the gasket surfaces. As noted above, you want to try and keep the debris out of the cylinders because they can get caught between the cylinder wall and the piston. Using compressed air to blow all this out before you close it up help...

Re: Tahuya State Forest 18th Dec 2010

Great video. You must be hard core to enjoy camping in those conditions. When I was younger and lived in a big city (Los Angles area), yearned to get out of the city when ever I could any time of the year. Now I live in the mountains way outside the city, in a comfortable house I built there. So I n...

Re: Yay snow!!!

I had this same issue with the deep soft snow we got hear in dec 2008, had to clear out under the car twice. Makes me want to put in hydraulic lifts for those time when there is deep snow, water to cross, and mud. Than I can drive it around "normal" and raise it up when I have to go in deep.

Re: Throw out bearing failure

You can likely drive it with out issues for while longer, but fill up the trans will gear oil. It will make it so it does not get much worse, hopefully. IF it quiets down after you add gear oil to the trans (see the proceedure on a thread in the repair guides), than it was almost surly the input sha...

Re: Smog test(ing my patience)

Interesting it will pass with a Weber all and all the other stuff stripped off. You should put your timing back up to 10 deg BTDC, or you risk burning exhaust valves. I had that happen several times until I advance the timing (it allows more complete burning before the valve opens and results in coo...

Re: repair help

where are you at? We need more information, if you are not far from a list member perhaps they can come by and look over your car and see why it is doing that. I could be stater, electrical issue, or fuel system issue. Sound like a fairly easy fix, but we have to find out the cause and you are not p...
