Re: Slamming the rear tire into the curb
That's what the trailing arms are for, to hold the rear axle from moving (much) side to side as the car's body goes up and down relative to the axle. The panhard rod also reduces the oversteer of the car caused by the side to side motion of the axle during cornering. My Sprites are a great example o...

If you're looking for the swaybar end bushings, look in the OE Part numbers category here. Tom put up the OE part numbers, or if you look for the Polyurethane Suspension Bushings post, there are some made from Polyurethane listed there as well. Which one you want depends on what you want, the Poly b...

Re: Noisy while driving
the wife had one go out recently, It didn't present itself with any increase in noise, but it would suddenly start to shudder (through the steering) as it went up the canyon, and then the shudder would go away. When I replaced the wheel bearing (front, that is) on the driver's side, the inner inner(...

Re: Rough start and high idle
I'd say check the AAP (Auxiliary Accelerator Pump) at the front of the carb- its connected to the TVSV (the vacuum dingy right by the thermostat) and sits at the passenger's front corner of the carb. If the diaphragm is broken, you'll have fuel in the vacuum line, and it'll just keep sucking fuel in...

Re: Highest Mileage T4WD?
Our white '83 (Our first) had over 360k miles on it when it got hit, I pulled the engine and put it in my Silver '83 and put another 50 k on it before I pulled that engine in favor of the rebuilt one form the Silver car. Definitely NOT the highest mileage, but it was still getting 32 mpg when I pull...

Re: Some basic carb cleaning and rebuild info
I use 3/8 drive ratchet with thin diameter 6” extension. When re-installing put a dab of non-hardening gasket compound on nut before putting nut in socket. That thares the way it won’t fall out. I have an easier way to start the nuts-- After having to fish those nuts out a few times with my reacher...

Re: Definition of a piston missing its skirt
When I rebuilt the engine for the '83, I noticed that the gudgeon pin (wrist pin) was binding on the piston causing the piston to not rotate around it as it should (i.e. it would bind up and take a good bit of force to get it to move). This, in itself, prompted me to replace the pistons and pins. Th...

Re: Window and Door Latch Repair
Sounds like a bad window regulator with a few teeth being damaged. I found that the window seal in my wife's car ('85) was pulled down out of the rear corner causing it to not close all of the way. To fix, I rolled the window down, pulled up gently on the seal while my daughter rolled the window up,...

Re: dumb question about weber upgrade
The Weber 32/36 also came on BMW 1600s and 2002s -Not the Tii models because they had mechanical injection (what a PITA to adjust!), but those were fairly few and far between. The 1600 models will probably need only a little rejetting since the engine size is similar. When looking at the FIATs, look...

'85 FSM, EM-44, second panel down, shows upper half grooved, lower half solid. I stand corrected.

Re: on crankshafts, bearings, micrometers & plastigage
The reason that the crank isn't larger at the grooves is that you didn't run the engine dry. The bearings are WAY softer than the crank, so that the bearings wear, not the journals. If you run the half and half bearings, yes, put the grooved ones on the block side so the oil is fed to them. Are you ...

Re: noisy speedometer in very cold weather
I swapped the SWMBO's speedo over because of this problem, it helped, but it didn't cure it, I THINK that its related to the broken tabs on the speedo cable housing connector. Both of the cars that I've had that do this had/have one of the plastic retainer tabs broken off at the speedo head. If one ...

Re: Trying to Replace Transmission!
This is an easy one. from under the car, you'll see that there are grooves cut into the axle just outboard of where it enters the diff/tranny. place a prybar (I use the 14" flat one) into the groove and rest the bar onto the trans so that when you push towards the trans, it pries the axle out o...

Re: Trying to Replace Transmission!
The best trick that I've found for removing the tie rod is to back the nut off until its flush with the end of the stud, then hit the arm itself (that the tie rod end goes through) with a sturdy steel hammer (not something that absorbs the impact like copper or brass) out near where the tie rod come...

If you think that's fun, try the unit of Slugs for mass! =lb*s^2/ft-I always convert to SI and then back when I need mass, its soooo much easier!
