Re: weak acceleration, lacking power uphill, occasional back

David- Check your throttle positioner (dashpot closest to the radiator), It's supposed to slow the closing of the throttle plates when encountering sudden deceleration. The FSM has the setting procedure for it, I'm assuming that you checked that the timing belt hasn't slipped while you had the valve...

Re: Car died, and now won't start

Serpenatria- Sorry that i haven't been paying attention to this thread. I'm in Nederland (West of Boulder) if you need help- I could probably make my way down there. Before you pull the old dizzy out, set the timing mark on TDC (front of the engine down by the crank pulley) -Its on TDC when the dist...

Re: Plastic Connector/Coupling For Rear Wiper Linkage Arm?

Tom, I ran into this when my wipers quit working during a hellacious snowstorm. The front wipers are run the same way-ball and socket (yes, Tom that is a ball in there). That said, the plastic pieces are, as you said, NLA- the only way to fix it is to find a piece in the JY. The arm with the dome (o...

AM 55 amp IC alternator bearings

After going around about this a second time with my local FLAPS, I took matters into my own hands and found the bearings for the '85 and later alternators. The bearing on the drive end is a common 6302, fully sealed bearing; the commutator bearing, on the other hand, is a special one that no one mak...

Re: internal or external regulator, 50 amp or 60 amp alterna

I've had 3 '83s, all without internal regulator (the larger, physically, alternator) and 3 '85s all with the internal regulator (smaller alternator). I just ran outside to the '83 SR5 and checked that against the FSM, and Tom is right, the internally regulated is the later, smaller alternator. Accor...

Re: Dies at idle

At first blush, it seems that a hacksaw blade would be too thin, but its worth a try. What I had in mind was a piece of hex stock turned to the ID of the mixture screw hole, and then milled to create a slotted screwdriver end. That way the blade is always concentric and perpendicular to the mixture ...

Re: Dies at idle

Exactly the problem, Tom, If the screwdrivers are the large enough, they are too large. I ground one of my small, long flat blades down and all it does is bugger up the mixture screw. I'll just keep thinking, after all, that's what I'm good at

Re: internal or external regulator, 50 amp or 60 amp alterna

The 55 amp external regulator is factory for '85 and on. It's actually smaller than the 50 amp internally reg. As long as it fits and the plug is right, no downside to more output in my mind.

Re: want to get the most out of my Tercel

Kapteinmoby - try this URL- it has the jettings for sea level that they supply on new 32/36s. http://www.racetep.com/webercarbjet.html vwguy- I did all of this when I rebuilt my '83It's got much better low end torque as well as more consistent response and it pulls straight out to 5+k Rs, but my mi...

Re: Dies at idle

Ah! The Throttle Positioner- Hadn't thought of that- What tool (specifically) do you use to adjust the mixture? I always run into the problem of flat-blade screwdriver at an angle not engaging when the blade is vertical, due to the EGR system being in the way. Makes adjustment difficult to say the l...

Re: Dies at idle

Which Dashpot screw was out of adjustment? The only one that I know of is on the choke breaker. The reason I ask is that I've been fighting a similar problem on the green car. Granted I haven't gone through all of the adjustment routine as I just got the carb reassembled- had to replace the choke br...

Re: towing my 1984 tercel 4wd

If you're towing for a short distance (~<25-30 miles) then you should be fine towing on a dolly from the front (front wheels up). According to Petros (I think), if you tow too long without disconnecting the rear drive shaft, you run the risk of damaging the transfer case bearings. I've towed one wit...

It sounds like you don't have anything on the nut -They aren't welded nuts. Try this link to where Tom points out where the nut access holes are:

Re: parts recommendations for 87 JTAL35W2H0262665 rebuild

It's definitely not normal to go through the electrical parts that quickly. If the starter is not tight to the bell housing, it will just spin sometimes and not engage, if it is just clicking, then the contacts in the solenoid are the typical culprit (~$6 US), but do make sure that you have a good g...

Re: Gauge Cluster Removal

Eli- Be sure to wait until you have the cover/shroud off before trying to remove the speedo cable end- It's like the electrical connectors where you have to squeeze both sides before you pull it off. If you don't get it right, it'll break one of the clips off and then when it gets cold, the speedoi'...
