Re: WATER PUMP QUESTION

Yes it needs a sealant, I always use sealant on paper gaskets, try high tack by permatex, make sure you let it get tack free after applying to both surfaces and the gasket before reassembling (like contact cement). No, it will not. There is an O-ring behind the suction cover- Go get one from the dea...

Re: Second Impressions

Welcome to the Tercel life, Scotty! Whine- No fan clutch, it's electric. You don't have power steering, so I'd suspect the alternator or water pump- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Shocks- KYB, Gas adjusts are a waste of money on these cars (IMHO), I put one set on one car and regulars on th...

Re: Wobble in front passenger wheel well during acceleration

Kind of sounds like what hte green car was doing when I bought it. Check the front wheel bearing on that side. When I disassembled that one, the inner inner race FELL out of the bearing it was so badly worn (it should be a press-fit)- the wobble and vibration came during braking, and it was (I surmi...

Re: Fuel tank sending unit

I fixed this problem with my wife's around Xmas. The contact inside was actually worn down (i.e. to the point that there was a hole in it) to the point where it would short to the middle of the rheostat constantly. I shaped a piece of 8 mil copper to slip over the sliding contact and then soldered i...

Re: Weird creaking noise

You might also check your diagonal braces behind the crossmember- They're made form tubing that's been flattened and drilled for the bolts to mount them. I had a broken one on the wife's and it created a groaning sound, replaced it and TADA!, no more noise. Just take a look, its a low probability, b...

Re: Alternator and PS pump belt replacement

Just did this on Saturday- There's a second adjuster bolt on the rear of the PS pump- They're both 14mm hex, also loosen the lower pivot bolt and you may have to deform the lower radiator hose a bit as well to get the PS belt off. Still need to do this on the wife's with the new engine though. :roll...

Re: Timing belt LOWER COVER fukishima

Eli- Do NOT leave the bolt loose, you run the risk of jumping a tooth on the belt when you load the belt. Just loosen the bolt, allow the spring to take up the slack and then tighten it down. I try to reset the tensioner/idler pulley around every 15K miles or when I'm in there close by to take up an...

Re: simple starter question

If your gear reduction starter is just clicking, the fix, once you have it out, is to pull the back plate off of the solenoid, remove the center piece, and then replace the contact on the side of the starter that connects to the battery (The side that doesn't connect to the starter motor itself). th...

Re: 1983 Tercel won't fire up

The AAP diaphragm can be had from the dealer, no aftermarket is available that I know of. It also comes in a carb rebuild kit. Replacing the AAP is a three screw affair once you take the air cleaner off-Just be sure to catch the spring when you pull the cover and get it back in correctly. In the mea...

Re: Timing belt LOWER COVER fukishima

Is it bearing in the middle of the timing belt top to bottom? (See Page EM-7 fo manual)-If so, that's the idler pulley that applies tension to the timing belt. Its a service part-one bolt in the middle, gently and carefully remove the spring (so it doesn't fly away) and wiggle the pulley assembly of...

Re: What breaks on a Tercel?

If I were you, Sam, I'd put the car back up on the 14s that you had on it this winter- Low riders and 4 wheeling don't mix! :o I'd also carry an extra oil filter and a change of oil- even though the drain plug is above the crossmember, it'd be a drag to rip it off/open and not have anything to refil...

Re: AM 55 amp IC alternator bearings

I just wanted to replace them as a matter of course since I had it apart-WARNING! THE BEARING #s I LISTED DON'T, IN FACT, FIT. THEY'RE JUST A SCOSH TOO SMALL ON THE OD TO FIT WELL INTO THE HOUSING- So if the bearings go out, just replace the alternator with one from your FLAPS.

Re: Car died, and now won't start

Ditto on the large vac line to the air cleaner- If the air filter isn't bolted to the valve cover (and most are in some state of disrepair) then it is possible for it to have shaken off during the twisties in GGSP. AS DLB suggested, check the tightness of the dizzy. PM me during the week if you need...

'87 FS in Nederland, CO

No, none of mine, NFI, an '87 with a fair body, broken composite(?) headlights, broken tail light, ~190k miles. It's sitting in the Park "n Ride with a For Sale sign-$750.
I haven't driven it, haven't even contacted the guy, I already have 6 including one shell and one parts car.
