Re: Road trip diary
Monday Jan 4th (continued): We drove southeast on I-82 in the damp weather. Both Google Maps and MS Streets & Trips had us get off the interstate at the town of Prosser and take a state highway directly south to the Columbia river, and follow it east to where we again pick up I-82 where it cross...

Re: Cold Starting weber 32/36
you could rig a manual flap on the heat riser to the weber air filter. You get cold air off the heat riser on start up anyway, after the exhaust warms up you get the warmer intake air thru the heat riser. The warmer air might be required to get better fuel atomization, when really cold you could fli...

Re: 1983-88 tercel fenders/headlights
That swap should be easy, going the other way you have to drill a few extra holes in the sub frame. You will need the side marker lights, the headlight trim with the parking lights, and the grill, nothing on the front is compatible with the two light styles. I need a driver's side composite headligh...

Road trip diary
Here is the first installment of the long awaited road trip. I returned home early Tuesday morning, January 12th at 12:50 am, from delivering my daughter to Austin TX, where she goes to school. We drove over 5000 miles, crossed three mountain ranges, braved snow, rain, ice storms, subfreezing weathe...

Re: carburator rebuild, size of jets
how about the ones that came out of your car? Different states have slightly differnt requirements, I recall that CA cars always produced a bit less hp and mpg than the 48 state version, presumably to get lower emissions. I would go with the 48 state configuration.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Need Transmission 1985 5-speed 4wd Wagon
I am currently driving one with 305k miles, and it is smooth and quiet. 2nd and 3rd syncro a bit slow when cold, but otherwise it is as good as any I have driven. So high miles can be good too, and there is one available at the local yard, it is just more risky than one with "only" 150k on...

I would be interested, called a "bra". Perhaps I can drive out and get it in person soon, you are not too far IIRC and we can meet.

Re: Click sound when starting (no ignition)
Check not only your starter cables, but also the engine ground cables (there should be one off the head to the fire wall and one off the block to the frame down near the starter), and check both ends of the battery ground too. You might have a bad solenoid on the starter and it happened to fail a fe...

Re: Need Transmission 1985 5-speed 4wd Wagon
It is often easier to find a whole car junker for a less than $200 for the tranny than it is to find just a tranny (in the last 4 years I have bought two non-running Tercel 4wd for $100 with good trans in them, one was for parts, the other a fixer). Look around in local paper, Craig's list and even ...

Re: Predetonation Q
I run 10 deg advance (vac line off) on both my Tercels, and have no ping. If the EGR is malfunctioning it can cause ping, or you could be running too lean for some reason. It should not ping under light loads with 10 deg advance on regular gas. If the ping just started recently I would look for some...

it says it has ABS brakes and airbags? Is that true, or just a misprint? IT also says alloy wheels but the pic shows the factory steel wheels.

Re: Transmission Gaskets
Sometimes on ebay there is a Tercel4wd tranny overhaul kit that shows up (likely old inventory the seller found somewhere). IT is usually costly, like $450. Not sure it is worth it, but it would have bearings, syncros, gaskets and seals. Not sure it is worth the cost, but you would get more new part...

Re: heater core removal question, help, etc.
It is easy to get to the heater core without removing it. Remove the glove box and than you can remove the duct that joins the blower (on the right side above the passenger foot well) and the heater box in the center. The duct is held in place with only a few screws. If you have air conditioner this...

Re: 15 mpg?? what could be wrong?
I was just in the LA yesterday, but I am back home today in WA. If I had time I could have look at it for you. Anyway, also look for a vacuum leak, with it on fast idle spray carb cleaner on the vac lines and tubes, and fittings. The engine will slow down when it sucks in carb cleaner. It could be t...
