Re: how to check oil pressure gauge/sending unit?

I have seen so many bad oil sending units on Japaneese motorcycles and cars that were built in the '70's & thru the end of the '80's that I just replace them as soon a I have any issue. May not be the problem, but at least you will be done with the old one... Not my usual approach to electrical ...

Re: Mystery Transmission

Interesting coincidence on the transmission shop in Las Vegas. Those of you who read about my getting my driveshaft rebuilt and the tailshaft bushing replaced while on the road in Boulder City NV may remember how the old time 'yota line tech who worked on my car knew and loved our cars. I asked him ...

Re: Detailing Thread

After answering a question about clay bars in another thread, I thought I would put my knowledge to good work and ask if anyone had any detailing questions? I am a detailer with close to 12 years experience now and work for Griot's Garage, a manufacture of detailing product. I promise you I will no...

Re: Went over to the dark side...

Pity you guys dont' get the diesel over there. Or the dual range transmissions. Great cars though as long as you keep up with the oil changes. Yeah, that diesel s supposed to be really efficient, great mileage, but it probly will never happen in the US. Just like we never got fuel injected Tercel w...

Re: Went over to the dark side...

Subies are great if you play the game correctly: 1) Get the extended warranty. 2) IIRC the timing belt and a whole bunch of other stuff needs to be done at 105k miles. So unload it just before it has 100k miles or before the warranty coverage runs out. Actually this is true for most cars being sold ...

Re: Mystery Transmission

Thanks for the offer xirdneh! I have taken the tranny to my local mechanic and he got the bearing out without splitting the whole case. Used the method you described I'm quite sure. Now the dilemma is finding a new bearing as it seems toyota has discontinued it. Having a real hard time finding one ...

Re: poor mileage, no other symptoms

Got it that you do not have a cat now. But if it did have a cat at some time in the past the innards could have passed downstream and partially blocked the pipe or muffler. The vac gauge test with the should show a difference with the after cat piping connected/disconnected if you have a partial blo...

Re: To swap or not to swap? Ice racing Tercel

The cheapest and simplest way to get a 4a block is to hit the classifieds at Club4ag.com. The 4agec engine that came in the rwd GTS Corolla (ae86) uses exactly the same block as the 4ac engine did. It is also cheap as the ae86 fiends are always locking to swap something else in. I have seen members ...

Re: 2 normal spark plugs and 2 carbon fouled

You need to get it closer to compliance before putting a new cat on as it is still running rich & that will destroy a new cat. What about all the other gas numbers? They are provided by the test system to help with diagnostics.

A good running engine will have low o2 & CO and high CO2.

If you want to go with an '85 or later manual trans you will need to swap out the rear gear set also.

Re: 2 normal spark plugs and 2 carbon fouled

i guess that I should mention that there is a THIRD component in CA, besides visual inspection and the tail pipe sniff test, and that would be the visible smoke rule. Any visible smoke emitted during any part of the smog inspection is an automatic failure.

Re: 2 normal spark plugs and 2 carbon fouled

good advice from 4WDC. instead of seafoam you could steam clean the combustion chambers by slowly pouring water down the carb while it's running. some members on the board have found this works just as well as seafoam and is obv cheaper. do a search to find takza's directions on how to do it if int...

Re: 2 normal spark plugs and 2 carbon fouled

What i would do: Check fuel level in sight glass with car level and running. Fix the AAP issue or cap/plug it off for diagnostic purposes. Then do a Seafoam combustion chamber cleaning. Change oil & filter. Use a gas/diesel engine rated 15-40 wt oil to better clean out engine internals. Put fres...
