Congratulations. My advice to newly weds: always spend less than you earn, stay out of dept, save some money, allow time for your self and each other. And you should do well (better than most in fact). I think the Tercel 4wd helps in all those areas, so they are off to a good start.
Good luck

Re: speed question...
Many times I and my wife have forgotten to shift out of 4wd when we get to the paved highway (we live up 3 miles of steep gravel roads and use the 4wd daily). We would drive it normally at all speeds, including on the freeway, and not even notice a difference in handling or safety. Usually we notice...

Re: newbie possibly buying an '83
Welcome to the list. These are pretty robust little cars but the biggest risk is the trans, that many miles is about their life limit unless it was driven real easy and had the trans oil changed every year (which almost no one does, including me). The trans is the single most costly item that could ...

Re: towing tercel
I have done it several times. I know of some people that towed the T4wd behind motorhomes for thousands of miles. I do not see any problem with it, just make sure it is in neutral and the brake is off. I can not think of any mechanical damage that might occur. You might risk damage to the bumper or ...
Re: guages
With a "clock" type dial gauge it is faster to read, end easier to see which direction it is going if it is changing rapidly. I think even the professional racers are still using dial gauges just for this reason. Personally I would use nothing but mechanical gauges, more reliable and you c...

Re: Auto tranny downshift
If it otherwise shifts fine in all other conditions, it is not likely the fluid. It could be the linkage that needs adjusting, or the vacuum switch if it has one (check for a vacuum leak). Since auto trans were a relatively new item in small cars it might just be the results of the design of the tra...

Re: headlight protector windows
Yep, it is the little arrows that slow us down. The little arrows come swirling in your windows and around your head when the windows are rolled down, they tumble along behind the car, they cause all kinds of havoc. Yet some are still useful, like the little blue arrows from the fresh air vents, and...

Re: That black can above the master cylinder
sounds like a cruise control to me. Where are your cruise "on", "set" and "resume" switches on the dash? Any vacuum source will do as long as it has vacuum when the throttle is open.

good thing that happened in your driveway instead of coming up to a traffic light. a good reason to keep the cable lubricated.

Re: Junk or save-- tranny problem
Last year I needed a trans. There is a web based wrecking yard network where you can list what you want and you will get bids from all over the USA. The last time I did this the best price for a T4wd tranny I got was $450 for a cleaned, tested and guaranteed trans crated and shipped to my house. The...

Re: headlight protector windows
I was thinking something similar myself. I have ruined a number of lights due to road stones damaging them. They look kind of cool too (reason enough to make them). I thought it might even improve the fuel economy very slightly since the little arrows will not swirl around in the light pocket but mo...

Re: Interesting News Story on Fuel Mileage
Hey, I had a '74 240D once when we lived in CA (I wonder if it is the same one). It had a 4 speed manual trans, and though no hot rod, it was way better than the automatics and I thought it was not so bad in acceleration. It got an amazing 36 MPG on the hwy, despite the relatively heavy weight.

Re: Interesting News Story on Fuel Mileage
I have done this before but many things they do are dangerous and stupid. They turn off the engines at lights (wearing out the starter faster) and on long down hill runs. When you do this you will not have power steering or brakes, and they use the clutch to restart while on the roll (wearing out th...

Re: tapping noise
Make sure it is coming from the engine (use a long screw driver and press your ear against the handle and the other end to various parts of the engine to find the source of the noise). After the valve adjustment, check for an exhaust leak up near the head. Sometimes the exhaust pulse can sound like ...

Re: e-spec parts! bumpers, headlights and more
I would love to get a set of EU bumpers. Do you think you can find out what it would cost to ship the front bumper only, and for both front and rear. That would be to Everett, Washington USA. I probably do not need the mounts, assuming they bolt on in a similar way I might be able to use my USA ones...
