Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

I used Permatex headliner adhesive. I hope it stays too. Time will tell. The car is parked indoors both at home and at work so hopefully not having the sun beating down on it for hours at a time will help keep it from losing strength. To answer your dumb question with a dumb answer, no I did not che...

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

Compression check showed all cylinders within 5 psi of 180 (factory fresh!!). Could still be the head gasket and it's just leaking from the coolant passage out. I'm leaning towards water pump though. I like the idea that's it's just moving backwards via capillary action combined with the fan blowing...

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

Block is wet below the head on cylinder 1 but not above. Leak is not oily just wet. Looks like a head job is in my immediate future.

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

It's definitely all ending up on the ground and seems to be all coming from the front of the engine. I really hope it's not the head gasket. Although it would be a really good opportunity for a "get to know you" session with the car :)

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

I still haven't looked at the suspension and cv axles. I have decided to get a few fun things out of the way before I tackle that potential mess. I installed an aftermarket tach and a new radio. I'm not thrilled with the look of the tach (looks a little too Honda Civic racer-ish) so I may eventually...

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

Bad alternator indeed. Found that an alternator from a 22r pickup truck fits well and comes in a 70a version that is cheaper than the stock one. The case was a bit larger but the pivot is the same width and the pulley is in the same plane as the original. It came with a v-belt pulley but the origina...

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

Took it for a quick drive around the neighborhood this morning. Runs really well once it warms up a bit but idle is still shaky. Once warmed up though I had both the charge light and the brake light come on at the same time at low rpms. Alternator sounds pretty tired and smells a little funny but I'...

Re: Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

Thanks for the tips! I haven't spent any real time crawling under the front of the car yet so I don't have an exact source on the leaks so far. I'm hoping it's a water pump seal issue but it don't really see any signs of that from the top of the water pump. I'll disassemble some time over the next w...

Mike's 85 FWD 5dr Tercel

Hey folks! My name is Mike and I've been lurking on this forum for about a week now trying to learn as much as I can about these cars before tackling my new project. Thought it would be fun to document a rebuild log as I went along and hopefully have some feedback on my many future screw ups! A few ...
