Re: Charge and Brake Warning Lights Stay On
I'm really impressed with your speed in responding, Mark and dlb, and I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Will you forgive me now for throwing in the towel and paying $$$$ for another reman? The fates are not on my side! I'm 73 with a variety of health problems, a beautiful but impatient partne...

Re: Charge and Brake Warning Lights Stay On
Two answers in 48 minutes, wow!! Thank you for confirming my suspicion of the cause. (I was sleeping, saw them this morning.) I salute you, Mark and dlb. (Mark, your diagram from page CH-7 is for the type with no integral regulator, which I'm guessing you have in that beautiful 84; I have it in my 8...

Charge and Brake Warning Lights Stay On
Starting a couple days ago, when I run my 85's engine, the Charge and Brake warning lights BOTH stay on, no matter what. (Prior to that, neither one stayed on.) The Charge fuse tests OK. Adding brake fluid had no effect. Viewing the Svc Manual's wiring schematic, I'm thinking alternator failure (for...

Re: Replacing front panel light bulb
Once again THANK YOU marlinh and Petros for effectively reminding me to look again, this time with better light! I had removed 2 of the screws marlinh described (from the REARMOST row on top), not noticing the 3rd one. The 3rd one is a cinch - assuming that's the secret. I'm hoping Petros (above) is...

Re: Replacing front panel light bulb
Much gratitude to Petros and dlb for all this helpful info. I will try to pass along the kindnesses. I've got all 4 screws Petros mentions out, but so far don't see the three mentioned in dlb's writeup. Difference betw 85SR5 and 86DLX models? Next step per Petro is wiggling the cover free. For me ju...

Re: Frozen Parking Brake Cable
Response to dlb's Q: By "fulcrum bolt," I meant the single bolt that holds the cable sheath to the underbody. (It too has a 10mm head, although I butchered it down a little.) Please forgive me for my ignorance of carspeak!

Replacing front panel light bulb
This bulb lights the temp gauge and odometer, and it burned out recently. After finding no help in the svc manual, I approached removal of the speedometer cover (thus hoping to expose the bulb and socket). Removing the screws I saw, the lower end of it moves but the upper remains stuck tight. What h...

Re: Frozen Parking Brake Cable
Final report: what a challenge that job was! Aside from the usual hassle of finding the right new part, redoing the brakes, and dislodging both ends of the old cable, all without a lift, I was confronted with a frozen cable fulcrum bolt. Well, I finally got that bolt to loosen (without breaking it)!...

Re: Frozen Parking Brake Cable
Got the Dorman C93363. It checks out with my under-the-car measurements. FINALLY! Next step is to install it, like I did 8 years ago when I was a little younger. Adventure here I come!

Re: Frozen Parking Brake Cable
This time around I made sure API is getting me the Dorman C93363; supposedly will arrive in a few days. That number was on rockauto.com and now I see that Advance's website claims to have it in spite of the retail store's assertion to the contrary. Thanks to ARCHINSTL for that site. I can see from i...

Re: Frozen Parking Brake Cable
THANKS for all the tips. Yes I see now that rockauto has some of them. Since I last wrote I called another shop (Autoparts International) and they furnished me with one locally. Or so I thought. Turned out to be the right cable length but wrong length to end bracket. What a nuisance.

Re: Frozen Parking Brake Cable
Wow, I'm impressed with all the responses. As I understand it, you're saying those cables are readily available (as they were to me 8 years ago when I got this car and replaced both cables). Where are you guys going to get these? I went to AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts and they both told me that p...

Frozen Parking Brake Cable
Has anyone had experience freeing up a frozen parking brake cable?
I went shopping for (another) new one, and 3rd party shops don't have.
Toyota dealer says just three in the country now, $120.

Re: Ornery horn button
Eureka! After all this wheel-spinning, I finally figured it out, and cured the problem (with a jerry-rig). The problem: the suspension of the stationary electrical brush under the steering wheel was making it just a tiny bit shorter than needed to form contact with the steering wheel’s ring in all o...

Re: Ornery horn button
I am relieved to learn that my mechanic was wrong! I do have the FSM and very much appreciate the cite to page BE-5. As far as I can see, it shows the fixed brush but not the rotating ring. But now there's more to report: I borrowed a puller, purchased metric bolts for it, pulled the wheel, and poli...
