Re: Transmission Rebuild Kit

I've called a few different places and haven't had any luck on those BK224 kits, no one actually had any stock. Always worth another try tho :-). Most of the cost comes from the crazy number of bearings that are in the Z50, it's easily twice as many as most typical FWD transverse transaxles. It woul...

Re: Front Axle Spline That Goes In Too Tight Fix

I had this happen with a Cardone axle as well, I was able to get it in with sandpaper on the OD for a bit.

Re: 2020 tercel successor not available in the states.

Definitely not a lack of options or "denying" the market. A good example is Mazda, right now the CX5 is a huge sales success, while the new 3 is an abject failure. Both can be optioned with AWD, but 55% of Mazda's total sales is the much bigger CX5. The fleet requirements should drive towa...

Re: 1984 Euro Tercel 4WD Wagon

I've had the same thing happen where the spring on the Stat can't hold the thing closed. Basically at higher RPM the water pump makes enough pressure to overcome the spring in the cheap shit ones and it's unable to control temperature. Answer is an OEM Toyota branded Stat, I've never had an issue wi...

Re: Axle play at Front differential & bearing whine #%&*

There should be a little bit of radial movement of the axles, but not much. Be careful about pushing the axles around if your seals are old, I accidentally made the seal in my MR2 leak when I pulled on the axle to move my creeper around. A good check is to drain your gear oil into a clear, clean con...

Re: Adjusting Weber for large elevation changes?

Back when I had my Weber I had it tuned well for near sea level and then took a trip to Texas. It did just fine without any adjustments, ran pretty rich in the high elevations at high loads, but otherwise did well. If it's only a road trip, I wouldn't worry much about a trip over the rockies, it'll ...

Re: Transmission damage; how bad is it?

Without performing a full teardown it will be difficult to assess the condition of the transmission internals. The first thing I would do is remove the cover from the front differential and see if the ring and pinion are in tact. Since the car moves in 4wd it is most likely a problem with the front ...

Re: 7age rebuild for 1981 tercel

The 4AGE head is an entirely different beast from the 3AC, it has a combustion chamber that doesn't need more more than a touch of valve deshrouding and a good polishing to be excellent. The key to 4AGE's is to get the squish gap set as tight as you dare, I set mine at ~0.75mm when I built the turbo...

Re: 1983 Tercel Wagon 4WD SR5 | My Worst/Best Decision of my Life?

I'm currently running 14x5.5 Honda CRX rims, I think the offset is somewhere around 40mm. I just bought a set of the same wheels for mine, ostensibly for snow tires (although in reality they happen to match my AW11 MR2 in case I want to play musical wheels). They fit great with 185/60/15 tires, plen...

Re: 1983 Tercel Wagon 4WD SR5 | My Worst/Best Decision of my Life?

Given that I have ~ 9/16" of wheel spacer on 195/70/14's that fit ~flush to the outside of the front fender, I'd say a 7" wide wheels with 35-40mm offset is just right on stock brakes. I'd be a little worried about a bigger diameter/wider tire rubbing on the inside of the fender tho, when ...

Re: Isolate front brakes?

They don't, I ended up doing a couple rounds of musical calipers for my front setup before I found something that worked. I had to make adapter plates front and rear on my MR2 for the setup that I built. On the Tercel to get anything bigger than the MR2 brakes or Corolla brakes that I did will requi...

Re: Isolate front brakes?

You can get M10 plugs for the rear circuit on the master cylinder. As for brake swaps, I would start with rotors from a Mini Cooper since they use a 4x100 bolt pattern, then get a set of 64mm OD x 54mm ID wheel centering rings. This is how I built up a big brake kit for my MR2. For front calipers I ...
