Re: 2nd Gen 4A-FE Swap

Correct, wasted spark can be done from the cam OR the crank, coil on plug requires both.

Re: Non A Family Engine Swaps

The biggest hurdle with going to a non A engine is the interface to the Tercel bellhousing along with clearing the front diff. Then you run into the whole transaxle strength problem, especially with the torquey engines. Can it be done? Sure, but the stock transaxle is a serious limit when you start ...

Re: 2nd Gen 4A-FE Swap

The beauty of coil on plug is that you can cheat and run wasted spark by pairing the trigger wires of 1-4 and 2-3 on your ignition signal from the ecu 😉. This gets you the main benefit of COP without having to have a cam signal, it'll all run off the crank.

Re: 2nd Gen 4A-FE Swap

The crank wheel was from DIY Auto Tune, coil packs from a Ford Escort, all controlled by a Megasquirt. One thing to watch out for on the remote mount distributor is that the bearing is designed to be bathed in engine oil. It also only has one bearing, so the tension from the belt will ruin it very q...

Re: 2nd Gen 4A-FE Swap

Hmmm, only thing I'd watch for is making sure you protect the clutch cable from heat. I ended up wrapping mine with header wrap and still had issues with melting the inner lining when it was resting on the header. I was able to make it have an air gap with a zip tie on the brake master cylinder, lol...

Re: Anybody? Rain leaking in on drivers side

I had to fix this on mine recently using flowable silicone. I carefully pried the bottom trim up just enough to fill the gap with goo, that seems to have solved my issue.

Re: 2nd Gen 4A-FE Swap

Oh memories. Mine is still running, although all of the parts are much less clean. I ended up building a different header that clears an AC compressor (Texas is hot yo).

Re: Keep "popping" strut mount / strut tops when offroading, need heavy duty strut top recommendation

Bump stops probably won't help much if the strut mounts are really being torn up. Longer travel suspension to allow those bumps to be fully absorbed in the dampers is the real answer. In any case, I used a pair of FX16 strut mounts on my AW11 because the bolt pattern was super close and they were si...

Re: Never had this happen before

I usually find that weird problems like this come down to dirty or loose connections. My dad had a Talon that alternated between eating alternators and eating batteries, turned out the ground between the battery and and the chassis was just loose enough to cause an intermittent connection. First ste...

Re: Corolla knock.

There's not much to be done with an engine with compression numbers that low. 1zz's are a dime a dozen, I recommend finding a decent engine from a yard and doing a swap.

Re: Switching from convential oil to synthetic

On a low strung, low engine like ours there isn't much reason to go synthetic. Synthetic does handle high temperatures better than conventional, but that's really only necessary when towing or other high heat activities.

Nope, in order to get the pump off you have to remove the oil pan and the pickup.

Re: Middle fork shift shaft doesnt move.

There's a stack of pins and balls in the main bearing plate where the shift shafts are housed, you likely have one of the pins still holding the shaft in place. There is a plug on the bottom of the bearing plate that let's you drop a of those pins out. Be very careful to not lose anything. Do you ha...

Re: Arc or Gas welding suitable for chassis repair

Either can work, choose the one that you are more comfortable with. If you are making welds to hold panels on you will want to make a series of small welds with an arc welder. This will prevent panel warp. If you are making structural welds for suspension mounts and such you will need to make contin...
