the master cyl was bad. i finally found a new booster though.
my guess is the slow leak hurt the booster (or the check valve?). (it was slow enough that it did not leave a drop on the garage floor)

as mine was a minnesota car im amazed how much rust these get.
mine was nothing like that. spotless floors.
