Re: Texas T4WD 7AGE Project

Heh, I happen to have one of those prop valves on the shelf for this exact project ;) I've been thinking about finding a 4AGE head to swap onto my 4AFE, I used the generic style 4AF/4AG style pistons when I rebuilt the bottom end so I think I can just make the swap. The 4AFE is a significant improve...

Re: Texas T4WD 7AGE Project

[*] Brake upgrade Recently came across this link and will also be upgrading stopping power as it's been a concern of mine since I started looking to upgrade things. Brakes are usually the first item I improve on my performance oriented projects. They aren't exciting to most, but it keeps the car to...

Re: What is the average Idling gas consumption in a 3A engine?

Doing the math out for 700 RPM idling and 33 kpa Manifold pressure gives about 1.1 liters per hour.

Re: What is the average Idling gas consumption in a 3A engine?

The math is off because the density of air going into the engine at idle is about 1/3 atmospheric conditions, or about 0.4 g/l of air :-)

Re: Need advice on whether or not to replace carrier bearing before trip - with a video

The only thing I have to add is to put match marks on the driveshaft flange to get it on the correct way on the spline. The whole shaft is balanced as a unit and the u joints are put in a certain way, so if you get the flange in the wrong orientation it will vibrate.

Re: Front Diff

There is a bearing plate between the differential housing and the main housing, if you are trying to pull the bearing plate away from the transmission housing instead of the differential housing it will cause problems.

Re: Front Diff

The most straight forward thing to do is to split the differential from the transmission and swap the entire front half of the transaxle. This avoids having to set pinion depth between the pinion and the ring gear. When you have the donor diff off the car, have your mechanic measure ring to pinion l...

Re: Tires!

I'm a big fan of General RT43 tires, I have them on my Tercel and my Hyundai. Semi-chunky tread so probably decent offroad, super good in the rain, and I've been told they are good in light snow (although being in TX I haven't had a chance to try that out...)

Re: Fresh Weber and head replacement - oil weaping from exhaust?

This is a job for JB weld! Take out the two bolts around it and get a wire wheel/brush in there, clean off all of the paint down to bare metal. Use Acetone to clean the area until you don't get anything from a clean paper towel (seriously, get it that clean). Make sure that no oil comes out of the h...

Re: Fresh Weber and head replacement - oil weaping from exhaust?

As long as you loaded up the bearings with assembly lube and coated the cylinders with oil before install you don't need to do anything special for break in. I run cheap 10-30 conventional for break in with a high quality filter. Change after 500 miles to the same conventional and run 3k miles, then...

Re: Fresh Weber and head replacement - oil weaping from exhaust?

My break in method follows the "load it up and seat the rings" school of thought, I've yet to have an issue after two 4A rebuilds (4AFE for my Tercel and a turbo 4AGE in my MR2). The one build I didn't load the rings up properly was the 22RE in my old Celica and it used oil constantly, so ...

Re: My baby

To expand on what Petros said, lubricate the threads and washer *lightly*. Any oil that comes out of the threads will contaminate the gasket, all it takes is enough oil to coat the threads. If oil is dripping off of the bolt you have way too much. If there's oil outside of the thread crests you have...
