#4 Piston really jammed
I am beggining to think that I may have to support the engine from underneath then remove the plank from above and perhaps pull the head in order to get at the piston from above. Any thoughts on this before I try this approach??? I really want to get this car back on the road by this weekend guys.

Re: Plastigage question
does help but I am ticked...I have an empty envelop with no green plastic in it. Thanks for clearing that up for me. the plastic is very thin and sometimes a bit brittle (so it may be several pieces vs one long strip) the paper sleeve is open at the ends sometimes and the plastigage escapes by slid...

Re: Oh Bugger...#4 Piston misaligned
Ok, so long as I know I am not trying to beat a dead horse. I'll keep trying to twist it back into alignment.

Oh Bugger...#4 Piston misaligned
It looks as if the #4 piston got out of alignment with the journal. It's off about 10 degrees or so. Must have gotten twisted by the crankshaft pushing against the rod. I have tried to turn it back by hand an no luck. Any suggestions?

Re: Plastigage question
inside the paper "envelope" there shoud be a thin plastic filament (probably green.) make sure the connecting rod, rod cap, and both bearing shells are clean and dry. install the upper shell in the connecting rod, (don't apply any oil at this time) pull the rod down to the crankshaft thro...

Plastigage question
So I got out this green strip with markings and numbers on the side of it. My question is.....is there supposed to be some sort of plastic strip inside of it? Because there wasn't so I tried just cutting a guage portion and putting the that strip in and torqueing it down. I put it in single sided an...

Re: Suppose the #1 Connecting rod cap
i got the rod caps mixed up once i took the rods and caps to the local machine shop and asked if they could match them up the guy put a cap on one of the rods and inspected the machine marks (fine grind marks) on the side with a magnifying glass he switched 'em around till all grind marks matched t...

Re: Suppose the #1 Connecting rod cap
there is no problem, they have a number on the side(at least mine do ) that is how i know they are ok Mine do too. Oddly, the two rear ones have the number on the drivers side. It looks like the two in front might be on the passenger side. At least the second from the front one is for sure as I mar...

Re: Suppose the #1 Connecting rod cap
Shouldn't be a problem, compare it to the #2 cap orientation, the tabs on the bearings should be on the same side of the rod. You can also look at the contact area of the rod and you should see the image of the cap tab on one side or the other. Hitting the ground might only be a problem if it was f...

Suppose the #1 Connecting rod cap
Let's just suppose that the #1 Connecting Rod Cap fell off and hit the ground before I had a chance to mark it for install. In other words I don't know which end faces which way. How much of an issue is this as it is getting new bearings? The new bearings arrived today, the caps have been sandpapere...

Re: Bearing woes and some pics
Apparently there was a change in the bearings. that does not show up on the any of the parts list, I thought the whole range from '83-87 used the same bearings. I wonder if this was a later imported crate engine that someone put in the car. That is not unusual, and with the head already off the hea...

Attention 84 owners: Connecting Rod Bearings
Late in 83 the connecting rod bearings were changed for the 3ac engine. Up 10-83 you will need to order Beck Arney 0146080. After 10-83 you will need 0146163. If you go to the Rockauto site you can see the difference in the pics but you will have to have already pulled yours out to make the visual c...

Re: Bearing woes and some pics
Here is what I think the problem is. I ordered part number 014-6080 for a 84 3ac engine as the block I now have is a 84. They apparently changed bearings late in the manufacture of that years engine so there is a a part number 014-6163 for the later ones. I am guessing I need the 6163 one for mine....

Re: Bearing woes and some pics
Every new bearing has a tab on the left side which is somewhat wider then the tabs on the old ones. The new ones will not sit in the caps like the old ones will and obviously the tabs do not line up with the cap slots. I don't think these are the right bearings.
