Re: S2000 swapped tercel

It's like the "Hashtag Van Life" trend from several years ago. Before that, old 1980's camper vans were being given away free or trying to sell for $300. Now, barely-running ones go for over 10,000. It's too bad the Tercel wagons have the "4WD" logos on them. It just makes people...

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

When I've had a vacuum leak that only happened when warm, it was the egr vacuum modulator diaphragm.

Re: First tercel burning oil

Mine smokes out the tailpipe on cold days for the first couple of minutes, It's not oil though, but a mix of water vapour (a normal byproduct of combustion) and unburned fuel vapour. The fuel vapour gives it a stink. Could this be what's happening with yours? I've been trying to figure out why I'm h...

Re: JET - 2-way filter/valve??

The "jet" is just a small orifice that slows down the vacuum being applied to the choke breaker. The choke breaker slightly opens the choke by a few degrees on startup. Otherwise, if the choke is fully closed, there is not enough air in the mix and the engine will die right away. I've had ...

And check the little window on the carb to make sure the fuel level is about in the middle of the window.

Re: Charge and brake light on still after replacing alternator & voltage regulator

I'd do a voltage check. Check the voltage on the battery when the car is shut off. It should be 12.8V or so. Then start the car and the voltage should jump to close to 14V. If it does that, the alternator is probably fine and it's probably a broken wire or corroded contacts in a wiring connection. I...

Re: Distributor vacuum advance diaphragm adventures

Bummer that didn't work. I think many of the Tercels came with single-port vacuum advances on the distributors. Judging by the emissions vacuum diagrams, one port comes from manifold vacuum and is to advance the timing at idle. The other hose comes from the throttle body (ported vacuum) and is to ad...

Re: Distributor vacuum advance diaphragm adventures

I looked around my spare parts hoard and couldn't find my original butchered vacuum advance housing that I took apart. I assume I threw it out when I replaced it with a working spare from another distributor (I think I remember buying a distributor off ebay since there was something wrong with mine ...

Re: Distributor vacuum advance diaphragm adventures

Man, that was so long ago, I forgot all about it. I think I maybe used a needle-nose vise grip. At least that's what I'd use now. I'd probably use some kind of very fine-tipped flat head screwdriver to help pry it up. I'm not sure what happened eventually with that distributor vacuum advance. I do r...

Re: Erratic Idle - If it Idles at All

We've had it here for years, but I don't remember exactly when it started. The govt. info says it has slightly less heat energy, but that is partially made up for by its easier combustion. I never made any adjustments to the carb. To try and compensate for it by changing the air-fuel mix (which is f...

Re: Erratic Idle - If it Idles at All

The regular gas here in Canada is 87 octane with 10% ethanol. My tercels run fine with it. I assume it's the same in the US. In hotter places, there may be more of a problem with the fuel vaporizing easier in the lines from the ethanol, but we've been through a few heat waves here over the years (30...

Re: Erratic Idle - If it Idles at All

I'd also check the vacuum lines shown in red to make sure they are connected and that they aren't deteriorated: vacuum.jpg That is vacuum coming from the manifold (basically from when the engine is at idle) that is activated when the engine is warm. So any leaks there would cause a rough idle when t...
