Re: Diesel swap and restoration progress
I thought I read in one of the threads that the Tercel4wd came with a diesel option in Japan, but that could have been the later version. If both have the same bolt-up, I would go with the bigger one. There will not be a lot of economy difference (your power output at cruise would be the same, the d...

Re: front differential
The hypoid gears in the ring and pinion of any differential depend on having the relationship between the two gears be exactly correct. The face of each gear tooth must make contact in the center of the gear face, with exactly the correct clearance to prevent binding when the gears heat up. To accom...

Re: 2010 Pacific North West Meet
So it looks like we are narrowing it down to August 28/29 (two weeks away!). Where are we going to meet? Last time we started at the Arlington Pull-A-Part (about 45-60 min drive to the Mt. Baker hwy). But right now only has 3 Tercel wagons, 2 1986s, and a 1987, none are 4wd (there are some hatch bac...

Re: Has anyone thought of turning a T4wd into a truck?
If you cut the top of the Unibody, it will crumple up with the first load. These cars are somewhat light as they are, and when you cut off the top you turn it into a a soft noodle. Consider if you stand on an empty beer can, it will hold your weight; cut a hole in the side, and the slightest weight ...

Re: Diesel swap and restoration progress
I wonder if you can make a few phone calls to Toyota USA, and see if you can find a technical rep who takes an interest in your swap, who can get that information for you from their data base. I thought I read that the 1NT is a direct bolt in for the 3EE engine, which uses the same short block as th...

Re: eBay '88 DLX in Wichita
The dealer might not, but the PO could. And who knows what a used car dealer might try to unload what they would consider an old beater (especially if they figured it would get sold out of state).

Re: looking to buy a 4wd tercel. have some questions
If you are willing to travel, to any of your nearby states, you can find them for some pretty good prices. They appear to be more common outside of CA, where I suspect the emissions requirements made them too costly to keep running.

Re: Tercel interchangable parts
Sunray, According to the link the diff code is on the data plate under the hood or on the door post, but i can find no such code in either place on my '84 Tercel4wd. If the code is correct I should have the S304 or S302 (two or four pinion spider gears), but I can not find either anywhere. Is there ...

Re: Diesel swap and restoration progress
What kind of fuel economy does it get on propane? Looks like the Toyota 1N-T diesel engine is the one you want, it is a 1.5 turbo diesel engine w/66 hp and 96 ft-lb peak torque at 2600 rpm! way better than the 3ac, and 50 mpg as well. It should bolt right into the Tercel, same mounts and bolt patter...

Re: eBay '88 DLX in Wichita
looks like that dealer lucked out. It has several dents, rust, missing trim and a badly worn and ratty driver's seat (in fact the condition of the seat makes me think it should have 192k miles, not 92K). He probably took it in trade and only gave $150-200 in trade in value at best. I do kind of like...

Re: Engine Running poorly on cold start w/fuel smell, wht smoke.
follow the procedure in the FSM for trouble shooting carb issues. I have never heard of a warped carb, could be a failed gasket but unlikely (it is fairly easy to remove the carb to check). Worn throttle shafts can do this, but I have not known this to be a problem on Toyota carbs, I have seen it on...

Re: front differential
The front diff is fairly reliable, a few list members have had problems on very used Tercels, that likely were run low on gear lube, but it is not a common problem based on feedback on this list. I can not imagine there being much slop in the side bearings without blowing the ring and pinion gears. ...

Re: looking to buy a 4wd tercel. have some questions
Welcome to the list, The transmission is fairly durable if not abused (run low on gear lube, or abusive shifting), but the transmission is the most costly part of the car to replace (for a used trans, and new ones are not available). If 4th gear is gone, the rest is likely not too far behind. The ca...

If the body and interior are decent, and there are no major mechanical repairs to do, 800 sounds like a good deal.

Re: Engine Running poorly on cold start w/fuel smell, wht smoke.
Welcome to the list, It sounds like something in the cold start circuit is malfunctioning. What kind of fuel economy do you get? You have to go through the FSM (click on the on-line manual at the top of the page on this site), and under carburator it will outline how the cold start system operates, ...
