Re: 85 Toyota Tercel won't turn over

Champion indeed. Never have liked them but B&S seems to stand by them. NGK in there now :) My point was more to highlight just how easy it is to skip over something obvious, because it looks okay. If I had checked that spark plug with a meter instead of my eyes, I would have saved a lot of grief...

Re: How worthwhile are exhaust mods?

Engine design is all about balance. Factory engineers work to produce the best balance of torque to HP across the widest usable RPM range suitable. Can you get more HP out of an engine by opening the exhaust, yes, maybe, as long as you maintain sufficient back pressure to create effective scavenging...

Re: 85 Toyota Tercel won't turn over

Sure does. I usually check for spark by pulling a wire off, stuffing a spare plug in.... Last spring my lawnmower wouldn't start, messed around with it for a couple of days, I had spark, fuel, compression.... I checked EVERYTHING. In a fit of desperation I went out and bought a new spark plug. Damn ...

Re: 85 Toyota Tercel won't turn over

Please step back from the car and take a deep breath. The carb supplies fuel to the engine, if fuel is not the problem, why would you replace the carb? If you truly believe the carb is at fault, there are proper diagnostic procedures listed in the FSM that will highlight any faults. It is not possib...

Re: '86 T4WD for sale in Glastonbury, CT

I only did a quick scan of your posts but I don't see anything particularly daunting about your current ride. I don't know Petros, but do have a lot of respect for him, not only his knowledge but his willingness to help out others. Reading your above comments I can't help but have the feeling that y...

Re: 85 Toyota Tercel won't turn over

It very well could be fuel pump related, but why not make sure before dropping more coin on the problem. So lets recap where we are, am I correct in assuming that we have a good timing belt, properly adjusted, the cam and crank timing lines up and the crank pulley lines up on zero when #1 piston is ...

Re: 85 Toyota Tercel won't turn over

I know you feel you should have found the problem by now but your method of diagnosis is to throw parts at it, hoping to find stumble upon the fault. It is a much wiser choice to work thru a proper diagnostic schedule and identify the actual problems PRIOR to replacing parts. If the engine cranks we...

Re: Banging noise when braking

Late to the party but... OFF makes a very good point about having the correct shoes installed. If I read correctly, the noise was present before the brake job so I would tend to think wrong parts are less likely but do need to be ruled out. Did you get a chance to see your old brake shoes? They shou...

solarlord - you may have better luck searching for the correct parts by pretending your car is an '86 '87 was the first year for the 2nd Gen Terc in Non-wagon form, it has a cross mounted engine and is a completely different beast. Very few changes occurred for the 87/88 wagons so the 86 listings sh...

Re: '85 Van AT on CL in SF, CA

As for how they drive, its wheel base is a few inches shorter than a T4. The "buckboard" reputation they received is really only valid when it needs shocks. It can get a little hairy on washboard surfaces if you don't slow down, but that goes for many vehicles. Gas mileage is decent for so...

New Tubes - He only means that he has replaced the o-rings on the spark plug tubes, they get hard and brittle and leak, and most people forget they are there. (It'd be like saying you replaced the 1/2 moon seal, when you did your rocker cover gasket) Vans are like T4's. Useful beyond belief, reliabl...

Re: AE-86 beams swap

I think you're being WAY too harsh Petros.

While I really like the dash, what sells me on the whole deal is those duct tape covered rear headrests, It speaks to my inner RedGreen.
