Re: A Total Novice's Start with a 1984 4x4 SR5 -- Advice Thread
Adjusted the ignition timings today. Least, I think I did. Capped these two: http://goo.gl/T7YvVr Loosed the distro bolt with a 12mm, connected the timing light and started her up, looking around for the marks. Found em, I think! Little white tick, right? Almost like a distinct speck of dust. It was...

Re: A Total Novice's Start with a 1984 4x4 SR5 -- Advice Thread
Tool-wise, I ended up scoring a Crafstman set from a year when they were still made around the USA off a Craigslist guy for $150. Piecemealing it out from Sears etc. was already starting to kill me with what I'd bought last week, and the flexibility of having the wrenches (which I hadn't bought yet)...

Re: A Total Novice's Start with a 1984 4x4 SR5 -- Advice Thread
If I don't leave it on and idling around the 2kRPM fast idle for about a minute or two, it has the likelihood to stall as soon as I try to get into those first Reverse / 1st gears, unless I really fight it with gas. This is actually normal for a carb car. I figured that to an extent but am just ove...

Re: A Total Novice's Start with a 1984 4x4 SR5 -- Advice Thread
Hi All, Still going through the general tune-up phase and wanted to check in. Main things I'm still concerned about are fuel economy (last tank was ~20.88mpg, no real improvement after the fuel filter change / making sure vacuum lines were attached process) and how this thing feels starting up / bef...

Re: need help pricing my 1985 Tercel
Gosh, wish I had caught you a month or two ago! Bought a 1984 SR5 from all the way on the other side of the country and it was pricey after everything and shipping. I'm in Kirkland as well! Let me know what ends up happening to this guy, as a new owner I'm already watching the local listings and wai...

Re: PNW Weather, Rain and Rust
ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN UNDER A CAR ! ! ! I learned my lesson back in 2007: http://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4112&p=30192&hilit=glasses#p30192 Tom M. Yeah, stories like that guarantee that I will. No car's worth losing your vision over.. terrifying stuff. Glad you...

Re: A Total Novice's Start with a 1984 4x4 SR5 -- Advice Thread
The vac advance improves fuel economy slightly when at part throttle steady speeds, if it has a punctured advance diaframe it will just act like a leak, and you will not notice any difference in drivablity to cap it off. To test, put a hose on the vac advance and try and suck through it, if you get...

Re: PNW Weather, Rain and Rust
that just looks like normal dust and grime, rust is not an issue on the underside of your car. It looks pretty good for a 30+ year old econo box. no need to do anything for a long time. If you want it to look better, bring a big floor jack to a coin op car wash and pressure wash the whole underside...

Re: A Total Novice's Start with a 1984 4x4 SR5 -- Advice Thread
Random new thing that's popped up today: the clutch pedal squeaks when pushed in. The car's been out and unused for a couple of days, and it's been wet. It calmed down after a few hours' use today, but does that sound like something I could oil / lube up? Noticing that this was only going on on som...

Re: PNW Weather, Rain and Rust
While we're on this general rust topic, I crawled under the body a bit this weekend while preparing to do an oil change and snapped a few screenshots. This car's supposedly been down in mild Tennessee weather and the South for most of its life with very little wintering, and one power wash / rustpro...

(How'd you like that rain storm we had on Sat? Epic rain over here in the mountains! Started off with a single thunder boom that lasted for 30 seconds before stopping, then several shorter booms, and BA-WOOOOSH! The floodgates opened and the rain gushed hard from the sky! The rain was pretty epic. ...

I need room for this car... for once I actually have the money... I just need the room... Dude.. The research you've already done into the replacement part.. your proximity.. the rarity of a rust-free body on the East Coast in THIS model. And your signature: My tercel:: Hopefully getting a T4 this ...

Would love to, even as just a parts car, if I could be assured it'll drive home to Kirkland.. then I'd have to figure out somewhere to put it!
