Re: 80ish mph. Anyone else get er purring?
My 85' auto will cruise at 80 without much problem, just takes awhile to get there. The believe the final on the 85' auto is 3.909 and I have 15 inch tires so I'm sure that helps. Mine gets hot when cruising at that speed for long but I do have some flushing to do. a torque converter lockout would b...

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
Petros Great information! I will try it out. I'll report back with the results. Fortunately it shifts good at the moment but it does shift a little hard when cold. Will be nice to see if this improves it any but hard cold shifts is a common occurrence for older autos anyway. At least the old worn ou...

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
Yes. The previous owner ran straight water in it and the radiator has a fair amount of blockage. Haven't gotten around to cleaning it yet. The whine I hear sounds like the whine older transmissions make with straight cut gears. I only really hear it at low speeds and it sounds like it is from either...

Re: Fuel pump noise
Petros The screw driver trick was how I isolated it to the fuel pump noise, I should have been clear about that. The pump was bad when I purchased the car so that is why I replaced it. I don't really think it's worth the bother to replace it to try to cure the noise but it sure is annoying. Perhaps ...

Fuel pump noise
I've had a noticeable although not very loud noise of what sounds distinctly like a loose valve. Today I picked up a valve cover gasket set and adjusted the valves but found them to all be very close to spec and everything looks very nice (the engine only has 100k on it after all). Only two of the e...

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
Thanks Petros, After studying the wiring diagram, it appears the transmission temperature light is shared with the engine temp light on the 85' model where the light will come on if either the transmission or engine is hot. I believe it is in the same position where the "EL" light would be...

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
After reading the manual, it seems the transmission temperature light is combined with the engine temperature light. I know the temp light itself works (still need to flush the radiator) but it I will definitely test that the sensor in the tranny also turns the light on.

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
Thank you all. I will take these suggestions into consideration and check it out here in a few days. Good information. Oddly enough, I have read about a temperature light for transmission oil but my car doesn't seem to have it. Where on the dash is your low level light? Otherwise, the transmission s...

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
Yes indeed. Followed the manual's direction precisely. It has very replicable behavior. The manual's procedures are typical for most auto trans. Get it hot, park it level, run it through the gears, check it in park. Very strange.

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
According to the manual, the drain and refill quantity is 4.4 quarts so maybe I can just drain it and add exactly 4.4 quarts. Still, I don't trust that that will be an accurate way of filling it.

Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level
Have any other owners of automatic T4's run into the same issue as me? After driving around for several miles until the car was nice and hot, I check the transmission oil level and it was reading extremely over full. So, following the owner's manual directions, I put the car through all the gear pos...

Re: 1985 4WD Deluxe
Petros Thanks for the advice. I plan to do some flushing once the weather warms up. It doesn't consume coolant or push gases into the rad while running. I think it's just dirty. I do plan to do some head work eventually. At a minimum I will replace the valve guide seals. It doesn't consume oil too b...

Re: 1985 4WD Deluxe
I drove the T4 about 3 hours to Springfield today. It did good other than it starting to overheat if cruising over 55-60. The cooling system is really dirty from sitting for years so I'm sure cleaning it will help. I already replaced the water pump, thermostat, rad fan, and rad cap because they were...

Re: 1985 4WD Deluxe
Byota That's awesome! I actually mostly live and work in Springfield but have a farm out near Poplar Bluff where the car is currently. I just finished a bunch of maintenance on the car today and am planning on driving it down to Springfield later today. I'm glad you got that stash of Tercel's and th...

Re: 1985 4WD Deluxe
Thanks Abletocain,
I'm probably not going to be much help. These were made by a shop years ago that I believe is now defunct. If you would like, I can try to get some pictures of them and some measurements but it won't be for some time as I am away from the car at the moment.
