Re: 2001 +/- GM V6 4.3 Coolant Leaks
The water pumps on all truck V-6 and V-8 engines of this era are prone to leaking. The GM 3.8 engine has a history of leaking intake manifolds because half of the manifold is plastic. I've heard that its the gaskets themselves and I've heard that the plastic half is known to crack. Have not heard of...

Re: FWD 4 speed to 5 speed conversion question
I wouldn't make the conversion. It was during this period, late 70's through the early 90's that a few cars had both a 4-speed and a 5-speed version. In most cases, the fifth gears was in a separate housing as is the case with these transmissions. The gear ratios of 1-4 do NOT match between the 4-sp...

Re: 1986 Tercel SR5 4x4 Wagon for sale
I bought a 71 Maverick once that had one of those RV vents in the roof. As I drove it home, another driver gawking at it hit another car. I removed it.

I can't believe it didn't make the list.
Two of the contributors at Road and Track listed the 13 quirkiest cars ever made. I can think of at least a dozen cars that are as quirky or quirkier than most of the 13 on the list. OK there is one really quirky one but it was never a production car. The Tercel 4WD wagon was not on the list, nor we...

Re: The Tercel standard
The 57 Vette had an optional FI 283 cu in, 283 HP engine. Very rare as it was hard to keep it in tune.

Re: The Tercel standard
"For many years all of the Japanese cars and many of the European cars had cast iron blocks, and aluminum heads with no head gasket problems," I beg to differ, they had a lot of head gasket issues. They used a softer alloy of aluminum then. I have a theory about the Vega. I've seen a few t...

Re: The Tercel standard
Almost all Aluminum engines are made from the 319 alloy. The Vega engine problems weren't from the alloy, it was a design issue. But in GM's defense, it was the first use of this alloy and a lot was learned from it. Later engines benefited from it. I think Mercedes was next to use the alloy and didn...

Re: The Tercel standard
It also gave me a chance to redesigned the water jacket to improve coolant flow around the combustion chambers. So we showed them a new factory head, and our almost identical head made of better alloy, which externally looked identical (kind of hard to inspect the internal water jacket). Which allo...

I just had too replace all the brake lines on my 2007 Silverado. Now I know why mechanics charge thousands to do that job. You have to drop the gas tank and lift the body about 4" off the frame on the drivers side.

Re: Future of small 4wd vehicles?
regulations perhaps have made the manual trans and manual 4wd obsolete. I am told you can no longer buy a Subaru in manual trans, even as a special order. One reason I will be keeping my T4wd on road for as long as I can get parts to fix it. You can still get a manual transmission in the Impreza, F...

Re: 2001 Camry 5SFE random overheating
Some overflow bottles have a hose in the cap that hangs down to the bottom of the bottle. Most of the newer ones have a tube molded into the bottle that comes to the lowest point on the bottle. The later ones will sometimes get a clog in the tube right at the bottom so they can't draw coolant back i...

Re: Howdy y'all
BTW, on this engine, watch for oil dripping from the distributor onto the heater hose just below it. The hose will swell and leak and it is a b*tch to replace. The leak is an easy remedy, its the external O-ring. Just remove the clamp, pull the distributor straight out, it has a short shaft. Get a n...
