Mine has a 2" hole through the center too, courtesy of a big screwdriver. I live in a non smog area and the rest of the engine runs good.

When the O2 sensor went out on ours, it dropped the mileage from 26 down to about 21 (maniac son driving). The new one brought it back up. Fuel level in the bowl is the more likely culprit though.

Starfire, I wish they were a giveaway around here in TN. So far I've located one in GA for $657 (complete used) and a reman longblock in New York for $500 + $295 shipping and handling. I have two 3AC engines complete, one used in the car and the original worn out engine with 306k miles. I also have ...

It would have been easier to remove the six bolts in the cover and pull up. You just have to pull harder.

It won't have any affect on how your car runs, positive or negative. It will increase your emissions. If your exhaust is falling apart in front of the cat, then you will need to replace the head pipe. If the cat itself is not rusting out, you can put it back on and save the cost of another pipe. Bef...

Try a new O2 sensor first. They don't cost too much and they are easy to change.

Also, check the fuel level in the carb by looking through the little round window in the bowl.

I paid about $17 ea. After over 300k, the only reason I had to replace them on one side was because the inner and outer "froze" together and I couldn't align the front end. Ball joints were good too, but since I was changing the bearings, I did them too.

The 86 used two different wheel bearings, one sealed and one non sealed. They are interchangeable and I think most of the replacements are non sealed so be sure to buy new seals for it. You need the normal hand tools and a ball joint puller or some type of two jaw puller. I do not recommend a pickle...

This transmission is a top loader with internal linkage so that would be kinda difficult. Most column shifters were side loaders with some external linkage. My Borgward had a 4 speed column shifter with a cable to a top loader. I never paid much attention to how it worked though. Many JDM cars had t...

Yeah, there are 5 shift forks in that little transmission, I guess they would be prone to jamming. They break easy enough. Because 5th gear is an external gear, its prone to coming off. The 4wd selector shouldn't jam though.

The secondary is vacuum operated. You won't see it open unless the throttle is 3/4 to the floor and the vacuum is above some value, probably 5" hg or more. If the plate doesn't open, it won't draw fuel so the air/fuel ratio doesn't change. I had to fix the throttle plates on our Tercel too. I u...

If you have been driving around on hard pavement in 4WD, you would have broken something by now. As for removing the driveshaft, just unbolt the nuts on the straps at the rear u-joint and pull it out of the transmission.

Back on topic. I'm not having much luck searching for a 4AC motor. It seems that all the sellers are selling by car model, not engine model. A reman facility is getting rid of a couple of long blocks on Ebay, a 3AC and a 4AC. They want $500 but are taking bids. If I bought the 4AC, I will need a pan...

I have found the Bosch +4 works particularly well on this engine. This was the first engine I used them in and the improvement in response and smoothness was so remarkable that I bought them for all my other vehicles, unfortunately I didn't get the same results on any of the others. I don't know why...
