I liberally sprayed down the U-joint and the steering hasn't locked up again, but I can hear a faint clunking while turning the wheel past a certain point in either direction. I looked for a replacement and found about three different options from $50 on up to well over $100. Is there any difference...

Not any more. They will often "brine" the interstates around here when it is cold enough to frost over the overpasses and bridges. I don't think they use granulated salt yet, but they definatly brine these days.
