Topic: ok, a diesel swap isn't practical, so what engines are?

I would consider using the later 4A that is fuel injected, requires converting the car to EFI, but it would be sweet, better drivablity and lower maintanence. I upgraded the engine that comes with it and now I am happy with it. I upgraded my 3ac with flat top pistons, 1mm overbore, performance regro...

I did check all the sway bar bolts, and applied a large pry bar to all the parts to see if I get any movement or clunks. I also shimmed the left sway bar bush with a 1/4 in think rubber washer, which had no noticable effect (the left side was more noticable). I am almost thinking now it might be mov...

I know this one, and I am still studying it. I will share what I know, taking each in turn. If you have no vacum leak and your linkage is adjusted properly, you can adjust how quickly the throttle returns to idle if you like. But first, if the idle is high and hunts, it is likely a vacum leak somewh...

Changing intake length will change the harmonic length, and yes change the otimium power band rpm range. If the induction system was not optimized for the engine there might be something to gain. Most modren engines already take advantage of the this "free" performance, there is more to be...

I do not think I would attemp a desiel conversion. Even if you can find something that would bolt up (not likely), the grear ratios would be all wrong, the whole fuel system needs modify, etc. It would be a lot of work and the results would be disapointing I think. If there was a deisel version of t...

actually too lean an air/fuel mix will result in poor gas milage, poor driveablity an even poor emisions output. Including MORE unburned hydrocarbons. When you do not get a hot combusion chamber you get incomplete combustion. You can tune the carb for max power, but going too rich will not get you m...

I do not think it is unrealistic to expect to buy a used Tercel4wd that will drive reliably until the summer, or even for several years more. But do not be surprised if you need to do some maintainance and minor repairs (hoses , belts, etc) before then. Also make sure you check the car out well. Thi...

HoJu, If that milage is accurate (hard to beleive on a 25 year old car), it should have a as much 100k left in it before major engine or trans work I would guess. Still could need brakes, clutch, struts, seals etc. That life is presuming it had normal and routine maintainence. Despite the good condi...

I still have not found the cause, though I have been listening more to see if I can find a pattern. THis is what I noticed: Seems to only happen when it is cold, within the first 1/4 mile of driving when starting it from cold. I can not make it happen after been driving several miles or more. Even s...

I have a set of front seats in that color I saved from an '83 I junked. They are in pretty good shape. I am not sure the shipping cost would be worth it from Seattle to San Diego. You are welcome to these seats cheap, I can not use them because I have the peanut butter color insides on my current ye...

That looks like about 5/8 in (16 mm) think high density polyethene plastic. It is pretty tough, and in those sizes not exactly inexpensive. The front plastic splash pan is removed and the skid plate is mounted to the body frame that passes under the radiator, and the rear one is bolted to the cross ...

You are wrong about the design life of the these cars based on the Japan market trends. These cars have been designed for the US market mostly. In 1980 as much as 86 percent of their sales were in the US, and about 96 percent was overseas. You would be a fool to design a car around only 4 to 6 perce...

We need to determine what the differnace is so we can all try it out. What final drive ratio does your car have? I would sure love to get 45 mpg! Perhaps there is some part of the emission control system that is disabled or not working? What would effect the cruise economy? The EGR? The vacume retar...

I do not think I would attempt to leave the front diff. in the car and swap only the trans. I would pull the whole transaxle and swap out the front diff with the transaxle out of the car. Better access and less chance of damaging the trans. I have not done this, but I have pulled the trans out and r...

My fuel economy is 27-29 for mixed daily driving, and the best I ever get on a road trip is 33 mpg (with a recently overhauled engine). That is about what it was rated for I think. Getting 14 to 22 mpg as someone posted means something is wrong with the engine. How on earth are you getting 40 to 46 ...
