Re: Stock vs. Weber

I have owned and driven both. I like the factory carb set up, though as these cars age it is more difficult to keep everything working well. the stock set up is usually more reliable, and it runs better in both extreme heat and extreme cold start up. it is more economical and I have not noticed a bi...

Re: Tercel 4wd Transmission Input shaft gears are broken...

there are still good used transmissions to find for a replacement or for parts. keep looking. the front wheel drive trans from 1980 through 86 should use the same parts: input shaft and front drive gears. so you can also look for those. if the rest of the Tercel4wd is in good running condition, you ...

Re: Trying to pass smog, other repairs

running too lean or too rich would give you bad readings. You might try the other carb if the one on it has been altered, but sometimes they do not rebuild well and can be troublesome to sort out (there were slight changes to the carbs over the years, all similar but sometimes with different jets, d...

Re: swapping dash clusters between 83-84s & 85-87s

I have done it, I have the later type SR5 cluster in my '84, speedo reads exactly the same. in fact with the slightly larger rolling dia tires (on 14" rims w/195/65 tires) the speedo is more accurate than with the skinny stock tires.

Re: Rear pinion seal and bearing?

it seems you should be able to take it apart and just replace the seal, and put it back together the same way it was. but I have known people that have done this on the Tercel4wd rear axle and it ended up not just leaking, but damaging the diff bearings, and eventually trashed the ring and pinion. t...

Re: Julio's 4wd Tercel problems

you will need to replace the plastic cup for the end of the shift lever, and a large one for the upper pivot. there should be a rubber boot at the top of the shift lever housing to keep muddy splash out of the linkage housing. that is likely why it got so rusty. You can fabricate a boot from a bicyc...

Re: Radiator

that looks nice, smaller size, but the 4 row radiator should have similar cooling capacity as the 2 row Tercel radiator. I see them on Ebay for $139 for the welded aluminum ones, not a bad price!

Re: '83 T4WD SR5 wagon added to wrecking yard in Portland, OR on 5/10/2022

Petros, how much does the transaxle weigh? Wondering if that's a 2 man job. I have pulled the whole diff/bellhousing/gearbox/transfer case by my self as a unit. not too bad, perhaps it weighs about 110 lbs or so. you first pull the shift lever from inside the car, than remove the upper bellhousing ...

Re: 1987 Tercel 4wd project

those are such awesome Tercels! I bet the inspectors think you are nuts. No matter, you can not help yourself at this point. something odd I noticed about these cars, like no other old project cars I have own (most all of the cars I have bought since high school in 1973, were in fact fixer projects)...

Re: Oh boy, valve knock? Video inside

did you find oversized pistons? usually the pistons with a matching ring set are in the same piston kit. that kit shows rings included. you choose the oversize you need when ordering it. you get 3 choices: standard, +.020", or +.040" . I would go with the 0.020" over sized so if you g...

Re: Will an L30 Tercel window regulator fit in a Tercel4WD? Note quite.

the two door version of the car doors are longer. it is not unreasonable that the window regulator from the next gen tercel would fit, but try to find a 4 door (5 door) version so the door is of the shorter type. it is even possible the 4 door corolla door regulator is close enough to make work too....

Re: 4AGE connecting rods in a 4AC

you might be able to make them work with the help of a machine shop, but there were some differences. as I recall the 4age used forged rods, so those are stronger and better than the 3a/4a rods. but you will also have to check the length and the small and big end dia. to verify. the 3a and 4a rods a...

Re: '83 T4WD SR5 wagon added to wrecking yard in Portland, OR on 5/10/2022

someone should go pull that 4wd transaxle assembly, and save it from the crusher. even if bad, it will have useable parts in it to keep other T4wd alive. stock pile all T4wd transmissions you ever find in wrecking yards! the next one needed might be your own. but that way we can save the transmissio...

Re: Rear axle, drivers side. '84

as I recall, I seem to remember the right and left axle shafts in the rear were different lengths. they look the same, but they are like 3/4" different length. they also have the pressed on wheel bearing with the grease shield, there is a left and right metal grease shield that must go on the c...
