Re: Transmission compatibility
'83 and '84 have a higher diff ratio than the '85 and later. All parts are interchangeable, but you have to match the front and rear raitos. It is easier to swap out the diff carrier in the rear axle (it will not affect the gear lash), but if your old front ring and pinion are in good shape you like...

Re: Trans failure prevention
It seems to me that besides using the slippery oil (synth or molly addative), putting a filer should extend the life. One problem I have noticed with the synth gear oil is it slows the syncros down and I get slight gear clashing if I hurry a shift. It did not do this with normal gear oil. It must be...

Re: Engine Swap options
Good luck with that. I think 40 to 42 mpg is likely possible with a more modern EFI gasoline engine, maybe more with a few tweaks to improve efficiency (44-45 mpg perhaps?). I have picked up a rwd 4age engine, but I am undecided if I am going to use it, or alter a 4afe (or even a 7afe) to fit in my ...

Re: Gas tank size?
If you only paid for 10.75 gallons but actually got 13.2, you were not cheated, you got a heck of a deal.
11 gallons is about what I figure mine holds in usable fuel anyway.

Re: Rear Locker or Limited Slip Options
A quick check of the center diff carrier is that my '84 Tercel has 8 bolts holding the carrier to the axle housing, and the larger AE86 carrier has ten bolts. I have not closely inspected a diff on an '85 or newer Tercel 4wd, but next time I see one I will take a look at the rear axle, it would be i...

Re: Engine Swap options
The only way I see that working is you will have to machine, or even weld and machine the trans bell housing so you can get bolt up to the block, and you would have to make sepcial engine mounts (I do not even see where the side engine mounts can fit). I personally would rather stick to the engine f...

Re: Awful Tranny noise
I have never had the clutch lever get in the way, I seem to recall that when you drop the back of the tranny there is enough room for the lever to clear the tunnel. Once you back the trans off the clutch spline the aft end of the trans should drop even further relative to the back of the engine, all...

Re: Rear Locker or Limited Slip Options
You would want to up grade the front brakes, and possibly the master cyl to the same brakes as the GTS, which the Tercel badly needs. You could also swap back the rear drums to the GTS rear axles, it appears after my own inspection that they use the same mounting bolts for the disk brakes and the dr...

Re: Fuel Gauge
sometimes you can recondtion the fuel level sensor with fine sand paper on the contract, and fine steel wool on the windings. I have done it on other cars, and I think someone on the list has done it too. I have not had a reason to yet on any Tercel that I have owned. Does that mean you are going to...

Re: Awful Tranny noise
Petros, of all the ways you done this job, which one would you recommend for a first timer? If I was to do it it would be the way I wrote it up on my first post, from the bottom (the least amount of work). jack it as high as you safely can, you will appreciate teh extra room. If you do not need to ...

Re: 85 4wd wagon random cut out over 3000 rpm
This is exactly how a car acts with a partically blocked fuel filter. Since you replaced that check fuel pump, or possibley parically blocked fuel line, or carb supply. It is not too difficult to just remove the cover off the carb and inspect the bowl and float valve. Becareful not to loose the smal...

Re: 4AGE swap into 85 4WD
I have owned an '83 SR5 w/o power steering (drove it for 2+ years), and an '84 DX without it, I now have an '84 SR5 with it that I have driven for 4+ years. I like the power steering. When I stripped the '84 (it was a parts car) I considered salvaging the manual rack to use as a spare if mine failed...

Re: New Carb or Rebuild Kit, CA Legal
I doubt there is a California legal aftermarket carb available, but there may be other Toyota carbs you can use. Rebuilding is way cheaper than buying a reman carb, many remans do not run right. I have done lots of them when I first starting working on cars, when they all had carbs! You will need a ...

Re: 4AGE swap into 85 4WD
I have owned Tercel 4wd with both P/S and without, P/s is far suppieror. I agree than in most small cars powersteering is overrated and unnecessary, I also do not like having extra power robbing equipment on any car. Most of the small light cars and trucks I have owned have been manual steering and ...
