Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
As I read I was thinking the exact same thing. Luckily there’s a baffle in there to sorta prevents things from falling into the rockers. Crazy. Yeah, the bushing thing was stupid. I could not figure out why the hell it was rattling. No washer at the underside part of the top of the shock meant that ...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
Okay yeah, it was weird. I tried testing at both the diagnostic port and directly to the sensor and didn’t get anything, and then decided to replace the sensor. Engine fully warm, of course.. Yesterday I was able to get in there and look at all four spark plugs. They all look really good. However, t...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
The other thing I’ve considered is installing a wideband O2 sensor. They’re not bad in price and would definitively allow accurate tuning.

Tercel Parts 410 Auto Wrecking
For anyone looking for odds and ends, or big items too, there is a yard here in Buckley, WA called 410 Auto Wrecking that occasionally has Tercel parts. They don’t have pictures, but they are great about getting you the correct part and mailing things out, and returning phone calls. Scott is the own...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
I’ll try this. I can say that I replaced the O2 sensor too. Through trying to fix this idle issue, I tested the sensor at the diagnostic port for the sensor, and even after completely warm and driving it around couldn’t get a reading at all, per the FSM. The sensor wire was bent and missing insulati...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
Hey Nordic, Yeah, so I use whatever is typically at the pumps here in the U.S., which I believe is the 10% ethanol, and often fill it with the ethanol free stuff too. And yes, I’m glad to see so much discussion for this topic. I bought my car just this past early spring, I believe it was March. Anyw...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
I’ll check the gap here soon when I pull them to see how we’re doing with mixture. It’s not a simple as everyone makes it sound on a daily drive car, but if it’s obvious one way or the other, then changes can be made. I’m guessing the gaps are closer to .04” then .03” by how I do it, but good to kno...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
Mark, yeah, I could see gap on plugs being an issue too. I didn’t look up the recommended plug for my 84, and just put in Denso W16 EXRU gapped at .032” or .8mm. What most 80’s and 90’s Toyotas recommend. I always check them while installing new plugs and put them at a liberal but fairly accurate me...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
I counted the turns.. it’s sitting right about 4 1/2 turns out, maybe 4 3/4, it’s hard to tell and get a super accurate count while the carb is installed. But, I also tried my best to give it the lean best idle I could find. So just a hair under 5 turns would run smooth, but be maybe just a touch ri...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
Hey dlb, I’ll be going through the process of setting my dashpot and fast idle cam here today sometime, and during that I’ll check exactly where that mixture screw is at. So yeah, I don’t know exactly where it is. I’d guess about 4-5 turns out. I adjusted it, saw the improvement, played with it to c...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
Oh I’ve had it filled with regular octane that has the usual ethanol in it, and the idle is still good after the mixture adjustment. I don’t run it all the time with ethanol free, but often, as I do have good access to it. I’d tried numerous different octane ratings and the ethanol free for a bit, a...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
Thanks, and yes, calculating the changes in ethanol content are possible. I’m not in Finland or anywhere close to that location though, I’m in WA state in the US. And interestingly, having ethanol free gasoline did not fix my idle hiccup issue. It wasn’t until I adjusted the idle mixture that the en...

84 T4WD Carb update
A few of you have probably helped me out over the past six months after I bought an old Tercel this spring. I’ve spent some time going through the carburetor system and emissions components. After rebuilding the carb and testing every component of the system several times over again per the FSM, the...

Re: Decking my block - am I done?
It looks really good to me as well. I’ve never spent more than a few passes with a flat object and sandpaper, and never had one blow again, but I’ve also never decked a 3-A. When I’ve done this on other motors we used small wadded up pieces of paper towel or TP in the water jackets, holes, and pisto...
