Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Highly recommended this for ameliorating gear noise in worn gear sets. No downside if it’s just going into the rear diff. https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/us/mos2-antifriction-for-gears-p000009.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAnL-sBhBnEiwAJRGigsdqST_-3vTQkU6couAVWPruQIJkaQcaxITuFAnIxIps3BlpaUaVzRoC...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Conclusion: Ive test driven the car. In 4WD the car runs smooth without any noise at all. Its noticeably nicer to drive. I guess the new wheel bearings, adjustment and thicker oil did its work. Still when i lay off the gas and the rear coasts i hear the noise. Its quieter and wont always come. I sus...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Another update. Checked the sidegear backlash which was 0.2mm. The spec says it should be between 0.02-0.15mm. I would need to shim them up abit but i dont have any shims so I will leave them at that. I adjusted the ring gear backlash from 0.2 to 0.13 by adjusting the adjusting nuts one notch. Loose...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Maybe it’s the rear axel bearing It’s easy enough to pull axles Cup bearing in hand and spin shaft Should be silent and smooth It’s not worth rebuilding rear diff Just find a replacement Ive already checked the bearing. My last post had the details. I think the side gears might be worn. I will chec...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
An update on the rear differential. I removed the rear axles and noticed when rotating the hub that it was notchy and noisy. After taking the rear axles out i felt that there was some noise and play in the wheel bearing in the axial direction. I ordered new wheel bearings for the rear with all the g...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Hey, The best Toyota diff guy I know of is a man named “Zuk” at Toyota gear installs. He does work on all diffs for older pickups and 4Runners, but I’d be willing to bother him in this instance with a call, if it were me.. Zuk is a bit of a genius with the Toyota diffs and very reputable. He may ju...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
The noise is definetly coming from the rear. There is no mistaking where its coming from. I had the front diff cover off when i replaced seals on the transmission. Didnt look worn when I checked. Either way im going to check the rear when the seal comes. Im going to inspect the bearings on the pinio...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Found this video which describes it as a loose pinion nut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvmZ1xNTzAE&ab_channel=TomMorton Wow, neat video. I've never heard or seen anything like that before. If this is indeed the same problem as you are having, I wonder what caused it to happen. Like I mention...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Sorry I don't have bearing info for you. I would order them if needed after seeing what's inside. Before you dig too deep tho, you might disconnect the driveshaft and make sure the universal joint is OK. While disconnected, you could turn the pinion shaft and see how it feels. Ideally, you would ch...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Thoughts about the spacer: If its compressed too much? And a shim kit isnt found. Cant i just add another small shim in front of the spacer to increase it and then apply the torque to recompress it? Wouldn't it have the same function? I asked a site that sold ae86 shim kits from another forum post a...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Esaus, what are the noises you hear on deceleration when in 2wd? I honestly can't recall anyone here having a rear diff go bad on them. The closest I can think of to that is mixing gear ratios when replacing the trans but that doesn't sound like your issue. Did it have a leak and run out of gear oi...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions
Found a source on https://partsouq.com/ where diagrams are listed with parts. Bearing for rear pinion drive front: 9036830069 replaced by 9036830002. Some googling i found a source for the bearing using a genuine toyota part. Im going to see if i can order it to sweden. Another site had 2 weeks ship...

Tercel differential rebuild questions
Hi! Im going to check my rear differential due to noises related to deceleration and when the car is in 2wd. Im not getting noises in 4WD and when driving with load. I have a few questions to those with more experience with these units. Im going to replace the oil seal while im at it and check the p...

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil
Im using Biltema 75W-90 multi gear oil in both the rear diff and the transmission. Its a GL 4, and GL5 oil thats not aggressive to yellow metals. Costs 99SEK for 1l loosely 10€ so its cheap. My rear diff is making noises when i come off acceleration and when im in 2wd. When in 4WD its quiet. Im gues...
