Hey dlb, Thanks for letting us know what you found.
And thanks to Sirfoxx for the tip about what can cause gear oil to get dark quickly. That is something I am going to keep in mind.

Re: Unidentified broken object from transmission
Further update: It started popping out of fifth again. So for now I am going to settle for having a four-speed.

Re: Ignition timing jumps around.
Thanks everbody! I had this car pretty apart after the crankshaft bolt came loose over a year ago and got jammed and broke off when I tried to remove it. We managed to get it drilled and cleaned out without ruining the threads but I had to get a new (old) pulley so I know this one sure looks like a ...

Fortunately that bolt still feels tight.

Re: Ignition timing jumps around.
I should probably check. With tension on everything it doesn't look like it's loose but maybe the tension makes it look fine when it isn't. That happened before but it really shouldn't be loose now because I put medium threadlocker on it and torqued it to specification. But the issues stemming from ...

Ignition timing jumps around.
Hi, Have any of you had experience with ignition timing "jumping around"? Meaning the mark goes all over the place. This is happening on my '83 Sentra. It will go from something like 90 degrees BTDC to something like 15 ATDC and all over in between. My dad suggested the number one cylinder...

Re: Learn Tercel maintenance with other same period cars
Yes, I think my Corolla was pretty different from the Sentra. I don't think I had to do much with the rear brakes to even remember what the set-up looked like. Lucky me:) Nice when components function well and need little attention.

Re: Unidentified broken object from transmission
I've got an update. I put the transmission case and pieces I had pulled apart back together minus the broken bushing type thing. Before filling trans. with gear oil I ran through the gears with the car off and everything seemed as good as before. I filled transmission and changed the four motor moun...

Re: Learn Tercel maintenance with other same period cars
So the incidental color of your first Tercel set the intentional color choice for any that came after (: Yes, I have noticed that many newer cars here are in "earth tones". And while many are quite nice colors I do wonder if such colors aren't ideal as they blend in perhaps too well at tim...

Re: Learn Tercel maintenance with other same period cars
I will second SirFoxx's comment. That is quite a cute car. Did you pick red for both cars on purpose or was that coincidence? I think your technical knowledge exceeds mine (: Makes sense that two same year Japanese economy cars even of different makes might have some overlap in design. They are defi...

Re: Learn Tercel maintenance with other same period cars
Do you have any pictures that show the car from the side? In relation to cars made around the same time tending to be similar: I have an '83 Tercel and '83 Nissan Sentra and looking on RockAuto for parts for one right after the other I have to be careful I remember which car I am buying for. I came ...

Re: Rockauto discount code
Thanks Augustus and dlb. I placed an order without a code the day before Augustus posted that current one because the one I had was expired and I didn't see a current one on here. It never crossed my mind to just do an internet search for one.

Re: Unidentified broken object from transmission
Thanks Chris. Today I searched diagrams again and watched a video of someone restoring the 4 speed version of this trans. and I have seen nothing that looks at all like the piece so I'm going to just keep it in mind but put it back together anyway, it's better off out of there than floating around. ...

Unidentified broken object from transmission
Hi, My '83 Sentra had popped out of fifth gear a few times and I pulled the transmission apart thinking I would find worn teeth on 5th gear or in the sleeve or hub as is a common cause of that. All teeth looked good though so I don't know what the issue is. But when I pulled the transmission case of...
