Re: Fuel tank access hole
I think they put a big loop in the fuel line over the tank so the metal line will be able to expand and contact with temperature without causing fatigue where the line goes thorough the cover plate. I do not know, but when i had mine out I thought that looked kind of crazy, but they would not waste ...

Re: Starter works intermittently
I am late to this thread, but no one brought up the ignition switch. the internal contact can get corroded and make poor connection.
pull off the steering column cover and you expose the switch at the back of the ignition key cyclinder, you can see the wires off the back. put a volt meter on the ...

checking the drive shaft u-joints is easy.
With the car on jack stands in the rear, parking brake off and trans in neutral, crawl under it to reach the rear end of the driveshaft. with hold the driveshaft on either side of the u-joint and rotate each side by hand in opposite directions. go back and ...

Re: 4A-FE as a rebuild block
That is good information.
there are several differences between the 3a and 4a head (and a number of 4a variations). but they are interchangeable, I suspect they discontinued the 3a head and now just have the 4a listed as the replacement for the 3a engine. it uses the same size valves, rocker ...

Re: beginner welding advice?
I am not a good welder, my skills are rusty since I rarely do it, and I find a skilled friend to do it for me if it is important. but I have seen the inexpensive wire feed portable welder from Harbor Freight being used, and for light welding seemed to work very well. Easy to use, and cheap. A friend ...

Re: Running too warm.
coming late to your thread: you should replace the thermostat if it is over 2 years old, they wear out (and yes, they can fail by not opening all the way). it is a simple maintenance item, and likely the cause of the issues you are having. Buy a quality one, not one made in a communist factory ...

Re: Horsepower
Hi in the future (around 6-7 years) I want to add some go fast parts but I don't want to spend a lot of money on it so if you know of anything that can get me around 150-200 hp for cheap it would be very appreciated
they never made any "go fast" parts for the 3a or 4a engine. it only has 8 ...

I feel like you don't even read half what other people write sometimes, Peter.
1, I think you missed the part where I mentioned that this is the third distributor I have come across with a gummed up advance...
HI David, I just noticed your post addressing me. I had indeed read and understood ...

Re: ISO: Tercel 4WD wagon PNW
I have a friend that is willing to sell his 1984 SR5. it is gold, and though the body needs some minor attention (it has been sitting in the weather for ten years), it was running when we parked it. it originally came from OR with a completely blown engine (it dropped an exhaust valve, and trashed ...

Re: Door grab handle
I might have one in my boxes of parts. I am not sure of it, but I parted out several rust bucket beaters and saved a lot of miscl parts. I would have to dig in my boxes of old parts. if you still need one, let me know and I will try to remember to look this weekend.

Re: my old nemesis: another gummed up distributor
David,
it is considered normal maintenance to re-grease the mechanical advance as part of a tune up procedure. if it is kept moving freely with penetrating oil, and an occasional clean and grease refresh, it should never get stuck like yours. I believe this is in the FSM as part of a regular ...

Re: Rolled car back and forth while engine out. Reverse and 5th not working
I have moved a lot of Tercel4wd around without the engine in them, and never had a problem. if it was in 4wd, and in gear, it might transmit some binding when you are turning it, but that usually does not cause any thing to get out of place. As I recall there is a "plug" on the side of the trans ...

Re: Pilot bearing installation and rear main seal?
Welcome to the forum.
That rear seal should not slide in so easy. Usually they are installed dry, but I add sealant to help glue them into place. on older engines with some blow by in the crank case, it could build up more pressure than normal and push the seal out. I always install gasket sealer ...

many of the cars listed here are not necessaryily running. no worries.
that is a decent price for the two Tercel4wds. If I was not full up with other car projects I would consider getting them, and putting them both back on the road. but I can not right now, no room and no time for it.
