Re: ThunderBucket, my 84 SR5 project.
that seems like a brave thing to do, trave cross county in an unknow 40 years old tercel in the winter! I would have waited until the snow mostly melted. if you had to do some major repiars along the way, it would have been rather challenging working conditions. I have rescued many non-running Terce...

Re: My MR2 brake upgrade experience
I recall using the front flex hose from a Corolla to get the correct length. I also has to swap the left and right caliper so the hose mounted in the correct orientation. The corolla flex hose uses the banjo fittings, I had no leaks. As recall the MR2 calipers use the banjo fittings. You have to ver...

Re: 84 T4WD Carb update
I rarely replace the rear axle seals unless it is necessary. if they are soft and pliable, and undamaged from when you removed the axles, they should be good. If they are stiff, cracked or visibly damaged, replace them. I put grease on the rubber part of the seal and the seal land on the axle so the...

Re: The Tersailor (REBUILDING)
Hi Tercailor, you should consider replacing the pistons and rings, the cylinders are prone to wear if the oil was not changed regularly, have the machine shop measure the bore dia and compare it to the piston, as I recall spec is 0.003" clearance. if it is more, you risk piston slap due to the ...

also, continuing research on sensors, i found some stuff about crankshaft position sensor and airflow sensor controlling the fuel pump does anyone know about sr5 fuel system sensors - existence/location FYI, these cars do not have crankshaft position sensor or airflow sensors. those are only on mod...

Re: Souping up a 3A Engine
the 3a is not really suitable to getting more power out of it. I tried for years, and just kept blowing head gaskets because the head design sucks. the 8 tiny valves really limit its output, and the crappy water jacket design does not allow for even cooling in the head, more power causes it to warp ...

Re: 1995 Tercel stalls at idle - 338,000 miles
do not ever go back to that dealership again, they are either grossly incompetent, or just crooks. none of those symptoms are related to bad rings. what idiots. The idle air control valve should have given a code, this was a common problem on the early OBD cars. My wife's Mazda gave that code, I tri...

Re: Oxygen sensor ?
I think if you can sort out the factory carburator, it is better than the weber. the daily driving is not so different, but the factory carb runs better at extreme temperatures: easier start and running when very cold, or very hot. the FSM has a series of simple tests for each system you should work...

Re: Decking my block - am I done?
nice work there. minor pitting is not ever an issue. most important is that it flat. that is why you need to use a large flat stone to get it flat. Get a steel straight edge and check it with a feeler gauge, factory spec is that you can not slide a .003" feeler gauge under it when pressed again...

Re: Help! Looking for who built my 4age Tercel
sounds like you got a great set up, doing a 4age swap is a big job with lots of details, and special cutom parts, to make it all work together. there is a 4age forum on line, I suggest you go join it and they can identify the exact year and car it came out of likely from the serial number stamped on...
Re: radiator
It arrived! It is all aluminum. Looks pretty good.
Re: radiator
My last “slow leak” was a tiny one one a heater core hose. I finally noticed it, but it took a while. I had one of those once too. it was a tiny pin hole leak, when it was warm it just shot a tiny stream of steam out and it was hard to notice it. when cold it did not leak at all. one day with the e...

Re: 84 Tercel Petros’ brake upgrade
I have bought a complete rear brake hardware kit, including the adjustors, for the 4wd wagon on Rockauto in the past. other on line parts suppliers may have them, try ebay motors perhaps. I would think the older, RWD corolla (about 1980?) should be the same part, because this is the same rear axle i...

Re: Setting Ignition Timing
cap off the vac lines at both ends if your vac advance will not hold a vaccum. also, check to make sure your mechanical advance is working. with the timing light watch what the timing does when you rev the engine, it should advance. if not, it is usually an easy fix, remove the distributor cap and g...

Re: Effect Of Burned-out Charging Bulb
quick alternator test: easiest at night, turn on the head lights with the engine off (pointing at a wall or garage door is best), than start the engine and observe the brightness of the head lights. they will get noticeably brighter as you rev up the engine. if it is not charging, there could be sev...
