Re: hard spots in steering?

that is usually the steering shaft u-joint. there is a thread on replacing those since you can not buy a replacelment assembly. other source could be a bad rack, the teeth get beat up and start binding. if that is the case likely replacing it is the simpliest option with a good used one. the racks a...

Re: '84 metallic orange/plaid 80's radness!

nice Tercel. it would be a shame to trash it in a gambler race. that should be entered with a rust bucket or one so rough it is not worth restoring. from what it looks like here, that is not this car. go find a beater to enter in the gambler. you will have more fun not worrying about doing harm to a...

Re: 1983 Parts Tercel Title in hand

I would take it but I do not have time to go get it and tow it home. seems a shame to scarp it, sounds like it just needs a head gasket. appears to also have a weber carb installed, that alone is worth it, in addition to the transmission.

anyway it could be delivered to washington state?

nice addition. I have been considering this for my own car considering how temp sensitive these engines are.

Re: New project gone down hill only, bent frame

the cv axle has a large range of plunge, have your tried popping it back in? the cross member may be racked so one end is closer to the front of the car than the other. take some measurements, if so you can likely loosen the bolts and position it back into place. Put penetrating oil on the over nigh...

Re: HOW RELIABLE IS THE AC CLUTCH?

the old o-ring seals in the hose connectors are not compatible, so you have to change those out, and the valves are different (not a big deal to change). Usually the clutch is reliable, I would think you could bench test it (see the FSM). it will not engage unless there is pressure in the system, th...

Re: how does cottonwood burn?

not a lot of heat comes out of many "white" woods, alter, aspen and cotton wood. you can burn it, but it takes a lot more to heat the home, so you will be refilling the stove often. You also get a lot more ash out of it because of it. but you will get heat out of as long as it good and dry. If not d...

Re: What 14" rims fit tercels

yes it does, when in 4wd the drive train is locked out and different size tires will but stress on the drivetrain because each wheel will be turning slightly different speed. even if you have one low tire you can feel it bind, and it is almost impossible to get it out of 4wd because of the preload o...

Re: 1987 Tercel SR5 4x4 Wagon for sale

replacing tie rod ends or even the lower ball joint is not that much work. replacing bushings in the lower control arms is not a big deal either, at least the outter one. the inner one is a PIA, but usually the inner ones do not go bad as often. none of those repairs sound like a reason to give up o...

I could not quite find in all that text exactly what it needs to make it road worthy, care to summarize what repairs it will need?

Re: New project gone down hill only, bent frame

no pictures showed up, but these kind of frame deformation is not fatal, and easy to fix yourself. It should not need any welding, you need to find a way to bend it back without doing more damage. usually using a tow strap, a hand winch (come-a-long) and a big tree or similar anchor, you just find a...

Re: Any leads on window glass?

I do not think they used a gasket, they put a heavy bead of polyurethane sealant against the metal, and lay the glass against the soft sealant until it cures. I have seen this done perhaps 5 or 6 times, no gasket, just sealant. there are some plastic clips used to help center the window that stay em...

Re: 1984 Euro Tercel 4WD Wagon

That is just awesome! I love those old alfas. I worked for a owner that raced one of those, he some got the special edition with the aluminum body. It was almost a shame he turned it into a race car. That was about 1976. The street version of this car was called a GTV in the states. A really nice sp...

Re: 1984 Euro Tercel 4WD Wagon

Falken is a decent tire, good for the money. but I found they wear out faster than more costly tires. I went to Micheline M and S tires, and found, despite the higher cost, the per mile cost was actually lower. Nice car collection. Love the Alfa. I worked on one that belonged to my auto shop teacher...

Re: I can't believe it didn't make the list.

those are editors who usualy just admire cars, but have never been involved with them much. When I worked for Nissan on their racing program they would come around and interview the boss, take pictures of the lastest race cars, and than go write a lot of confusing mishmash car language gobbity gook,...
