Re: Setting the Timing

I sometimes have front pulleys that get beat up (mostly I suspect from driving without the splash pan, it allows rocks and gravel to get thrown up into the engine compartment), so often I have a number of marks and scratches easy to confuse with the timing mark on the front pulley. you can verify TD...

so how did it go?

I wonder what the story is on how the "Pussy Wagon" got its name.

Re: Is this a good buy or a farewell?

I do not know anything about the Nissan Diesel engines, but I used to own a 1986 Nissan Pathfinder, that uses the same chassis as this "hardbody" pick up. I drove it for 375,000 miles with almost NO maintenance. besides filter, oil and spark plugs, brake pads, the only thing it ever needed was an ig...

what a shame that someone sold this car to a wrecking yard, likely it needed mechanical repair that they did not want to pay for. That would have been an easy fix compared to a bent frame or rusty body.

Re: "Toyster½shell" 1985 Tercel 4WD SR5

you are on the right track. yes, good simple test: dibble some fuel down the carb and see if it starts. So you know it is lack of fuel. when you put in the new fuel filter, does it filter fill with fuel, or is it still sitting there empty of fuel? You just need to isolate the reason you get no fuel,...

interesting adaption of door panels. what were they from originally? I have seen on youtube how to make custom door panels, which are built from scratch from raw ABS plastic sheet and foam panels. way too much work. what you are doing appears a much more practical approach: find something new that y...

Re: Is this normal?

that looks like the California variant emissions set up. Not sure, but Canada may use something similar. instead of the reed valve chamber on the left side of the engine below the distributor (in the othe lower 48 federal cars). It allows fresh air to be fed into the catalytic converter, this system...

Re: Shock Absorbers

there is a trade off on suspension stiffness. without variable stiffness suspension, you have to match the stiffness to the size and frequency of impacts. High speed cars will have a stiff suspension, but it will suffer a harsh ride at moderate speeds. A soft suspension gives a more comfortable ride...

Re: Shock Absorbers

I know years ago many amateur racers wanted Bilstein adjustable on their rally cars, some even used them on their daily driver. They have a good reputation, though it seems a costly extravagance to use the adjustable shocks on a street car. those that used them said it was worth the expence, but I s...

Re: Toyota Tercel 1985 SR5 4WD Wagon

the factor device manual has a procedure, and an exploded view of the components, for the sun roof. I had to pull one apart to fix it, drive was jammed and it would not close (previous owner sealed a piece of plexy glass down on the roof...worked). the assembly that holds the drive is riveted togeth...

Re: Recommended bits and ends for long trips in a Terc??

oil leaking from the based of the distributor is pretty common, if not too bad that can wait. there is no gasket there, it is a large o-ring around the base of the distributor mount. it is an easy fix, most autoparts stores will carry the correct size o-ring (bring the old one in to match it). when ...

very nice. what did you do with your brakes?

FYI, you can up grade the rotors and caliper without changing the booster and master cyl. the braking ratio is the same so you will not find any difference at the pedal, but better warp resistances.

Re: Choke won't close

removing the carb is not difficult, takes only about 15 min. you just have to label all of the vac lines so you get them back on in the same place. usually if you do not destroy the base gasket you can put some sealant on it and reuse it.

Re: Recommended bits and ends for long trips in a Terc??

you want to bring parts that would leave you stranded. you can actually still drive it with a broken clutch cable (with very careful shifting), I have done it. fan belt, timing belt, spare alternator, a good working complete distritor assembly (contains the coil, ignitor and other ignition parts and...

nice, says "new, never used". shipping to North America would be costly, but well worth it if it is new.
